The 2022 Grammy Award nominations are here.

The most-nominated artist this year is Jon Batiste, who leads with 11 nominations, mostly for his album We Are but also for his Soul score with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Justin Bieber, Doja Cat, and H.E.R. follow with 8 nominations each, and Billie EIlish and Olivia Rodrigo have 7. Rodrigo is nominated in all of the Big Four categories: Record, Song, and Album Of The Year, plus Best New Artist.

This year’s Album Of The Year field features more individual nominees than ever before. Thanks to a Recording Academy rule change, all songwriters, producers, recording engineers, mixers, mastering engineers, and all featured artists (even if on just one track) on an album are eligible for the AOTY nomination. For the last four years, they had to be credited with at least 33% of an album’s playing time to be nominated. This continues the Academy’s trend of widening the nomination field for those that worked on AOTYs: producers were first included in 1965, engineers/mixers in ’98, and so on.

The nomination process also underwent an overhaul. Per Billboard, the online ballot process allowed voters to vote for the Big Four categories (Album, Record, and Song Of The Year, plus Best New Artist) and then up to 10 categories in three different fields in which to vote, in order to encourage voters to stick to the categories in which they are most knowledgable. In total, the ballot consisted of 86 categories across 25 fields.

A number of artists voiced displeasure this year with which field the Recording Academy ended up placing their submission in. Among them: Kacey Musgraves’ new album star-crossed was deemed ineligible for the country music album categories, though she picked up nominations for “Camera Roll” in songs; Bo Burnham’s comedy album Inside (The Songs) could not compete as a comedy album; and Brandi Carlile’s new single was categorized as pop, to Carlile’s surprise and disappointment.
