Dylan Carlson's long-running, ever-evolving drone institution Earth helped invent doom metal back in the early '90s. Carlson started Earth one year before Detroit native Robert Mansel was born. Mansel, now known as Black Noi$e, is known for his immersive, adventurous production for rappers like Earl Sweatshirt and Valee, as well as for his own records. Earth and Black Noi$e come from different generations and approaches, but they've just joined forces to release a brand-new surprise album called Geometry Of Murder: Extra Capsular Extraction Inversions.
Back in 1991, Earth released their debut EP Extra-Capsular Extraction. They were a full band back then, with Carlson joined by bassists Joe Preston and Dave Harwell. Kurt Cobain semi-famously sang lead on the track "Divine And Bright," and Kelly Canary of the Sub Pop band Dickless also added vocals. The new Earth/Black Noi$e collaboration is essentially Black Noi$e's remixed, reimagine version of that EP.
Dylan Carlson and Black Noi$e became acquainted when the two of them were living in a house full of artists in Eagle Rock, California during the pandemic. Black Noi$e built himself a recording studio in a closet. He and Carlson became friends, and then he started messing with Earth's music, slowing it down even further. In a press release, Carlson has this to say about the collaboration and the friendship:
I had been aware of Odd Future and its members like Earl Sweatshirt back in the day, but met Black Noi$e when he moved in. He is a great musician all the way round and plays guitar amongst many other instruments as well. We both got on well and talked music gear a lot...
I am always trying to push what I do forward in some kind of way, and I am always intrigued by music and making it by any means necessary or available. And I also am interested in collaboration, especially with people who have a relationship with musical equipment that I do not know about.
It's really weird to hear these two particular tastes together, with Black Noi$e fucking with the tempo and adding drums to some of Earth's earliest music. You have to be on board for a real adventure to dive into this one. But I love the idea that these two are friends and that it goes beyond a remix album. The two of them are also about to tour Europe together. Below, check out Geometry Of Murder: Extra Capsular Extraction Inversions and their tour dates.
