Maria BC – “Night & Day”

Senny Mau

In a few weeks, the Oakland musician Maria BC will release their new album Marathon, and it's shaping up to be a stunner. We've already posted the title track, and I'm just completely enraptured with "Night & Day," the new song that they shared today. It's a ghostly chiming reverie with fellow Bay Area musician Cole Pulice on saxophone. It feels spartan and velvety at the same time. I could seriously live inside this song.

Here's what Maria BC says about "Night & Day":

I imagined this as a kind of lonesome cowboy song, an ode to the night. When his workday is over and the sun’s gone down, he can be with the one he loves, and speak freely, feel deeply. This time is so precious to him, he often gets carried away and clings to it desperately. Then the morning brings shame, stupor, new longing.

One of my favorite moments of the album comes toward the end of this song, when Cole’s saxophone comes in with a falling pitch.

F. Saber Sutphin directed the "Night & Day" video, and Maria BC says, "I trudged through freezing mud and water. Saber built a rowboat, and we sunk it in the moonlight." That's below.

Marathon is out 2/27 on Sacred Bones.
