G. Love Loses All His Retirement Savings In Crypto Scam

The world of cryptocurrency is full of scammers, and the laid-back Philadelphia blues-rocker G. Love recently learned all about it the hard way. On Saturday, the G. Love & Special Sauce frontman, whose real name is Garrett Dutton, tweeted that he lost his "retirement fund in a hack/Scam."

In that tweet, G. Love says that the hacking culprit was a fake Ledger app that was available in the Apple Store. He says that the transactions happened when he switched to a new account and downloaded a "malicious ledger app." As Gizmodo points out, a blockchain investigator known as ZachXBT traced G. Love's stolen Bitcoin through KuCoin. Per Gizmodo, that app has "a track record of compliance problems." In nine transactions, it appears that G. Love lost 5.92 Bitcoin, which is worth about $424,000.

According to Gizmodo, it appears that G. Love downloaded a fraudulent Ledger lookalike app and entered his seed phrase into it, thinking that the Apple Store would've vetted the apps available. ZachXBT notes that Apple has since pulled the app, but Gizmodo notes that the company has made no statement about it.

In a later post, G. Love said that the loss was his "own damn fault" and that it should serve as a warning to others.

This is a truly maddening and unfortunate story, but there's at least one tiny silver lining. At the same time as his crypto-scammer saga unfolded, G. Love got to meet Afroman.

If you run into G. Love, perhaps you could buy him a cold beverage.
