Melaina Kol, the musical project of Nashville-based Logan Hornyak, is the latest signing to Julia's War, the fantastic record label run by They Are Gutting A Body Of Water's Doug Dulgarian. You may have heard Hornyak popping up throughout Teethe's Magic Of The Sale last year, and in August you'll hear him on the new Melaina Kol LP Okay that’s a great idea because if I do that then.
Lead single "Lifeheart" presents a glimpse of the album's unconventional approach to indie-pop, which here involves a torrent of spliced vocals (from Olivia O. of recent Album Of The Week honorees Lowertown) and an endless cycle of spidery guitars against a backdrop of ghostly chords and harp. It's gorgeous and hypnotic, and Hornyak has this to say about it:
With this album, I was obsessed with not singing. I kept imagining vocal lines that didn't really fit my voice, so most of the other vocals on this album come from chopping up Olivia O’s vocal feature on the title track, including this song, "Lifeheart." I spend a lot of time playing guitar and am obsessed with two dueling guitar parts that are completely different but serve to accomplish a uniform sound. The rest of the instrumental comes from some pedal stuff, and I was able to record harp in a studio my roommate works at.
