untitled (halo) – “sex”

It's always cool when a band is willing to release a song that's just straight-up called "sex." LA's untitled (halo) have a new one that doesn't even seem to be about sex, but it's called "sex" anyway. The band is a product of the recent shoegaze revival, but they've pushed that sound into weird and interesting places on "aimee lou wood freestyle" and "easy rider," two extremely cool singles from their upcoming self-titled album. Today, they get even further out into the galaxy on "sex."

"sex" is built on blaring synth-sirens and crunchy breakbeats. Production-wise, it's an urgent electronic attack, but Ariana Mamnoon's dreamy, dazed vocals move it into a different realm. Then the quasi-rap vocals from her bandmate Jack Dione come crashing in: "Fucked in the moment/ I’m just tossin’ it over/ I don’t think about you until I’m trashed and you’re sober/ This city is over/ Where is the party?/ Nobody wants me until I’m dead in an Audi." It's extremely cool pile-up of sounds and aesthetics that all somehow work together. In a press release, Mamnoon says:

This is a song that makes you feel like you just left the 4am rave and are finally walking to see the natural light. Perhaps the most dance track by the band, one that feels relatable and while a bit disjointed and gleeful, there are moments of restraint. The song is about a desire for the party.

The band shot their own "sex" video in LA and Paris. Check it out below.

untitled (halo) is out 11/6 on Dirty Hit.
