New YACHT – “Psychic City”

Now a duo signed to DFA, YACHT have grand plans for See Mystery Lights, their debut for James Murphy's label. One such plan involves bulging eyeballs (via their Boyd Elder-designed/holographic foil-incorporating album art), another involves a "carefully-crafted mix-tape ... of all the songs and 'songs' that inspired See Mystery Lights." On the back of "Summer Song" and the infectious, sandy, sunset jam "Psychic City," I'll assume making a key album for 2009 beach parties is one, too. Jona and Claire are being very upfront about the influences on this new one. Start with a listen, then play with the blueprints:

YACHT - "Psychic City" (MP3)

The influences-mixtape is already underway at "The Story of 'Psychic City,'" where the plan is introduced, detailed, and launched. You can grab MP3 of the K Records song which gives "Psychic City" its lyrics (titled "Voodoo City," by YACHT friend Rich Jensen) and learn about the other bedrocks for the YACHT track (Althea & Donna, R. Kelly, Brian Eno). The relevant "Psychic City" sound bits are isolated, and also the complete song is presented in instrumental form, for ease of getting deeper into Jona's brain than you probably need to.

See Mystery Lights is out 7/28 via DFA. So far so good.
