This is one seriously cool progression, from Alligator to Boxer to … at least the buzz here. The leaks and at least the Fallon “TL” have been … propulsive. My only fear is that listening to this album constantly will make the summer go too fast!
Um, I believe that was humor. That said, I’d love to heard Duncan Sheik cover THS.
Claiming die-hards are less than enthused based on small percentage of posts of the posts at this site (by people who make no reference to being die-hards) is kind of narcissistic, to say the least. I’m an admitted die-hard and, having heard about half the new album now, I can say I’d be happy with another decade of “Hurricane J”s and “Rock Problems”, but thankfully this is a band that’s comfortable enough with its strengths and weaknesses to both please its fan base (the aforementioned songs) and challenge itself (“Weekenders”, “Barely Breathing”) even after losing a member whom many claimed was the key to their sound.
Why is anyone dissing this song? That’s a crapload of characterization and story for barely 3 minutes! This and “Rock Problems” pop into my head at all hours of the day; the HIW songs so far are as infectious as anything in the THS canon.
The Hold Steady

Hey, Sufjan! How about another “Chicago”?
Hey, Pink Floyd! How about another “The Wall”?
Hey, Beatles! How about another “Revolver?”
How dare The Hold Steady not sound like everything else they’ve done? And yet, I’m so damned confused; first “Hurricane J” was too much like The Hold Steady, and now everything else isn’t enough like them.
“It shows them coming up with a way to elevate things successfully outside their usual approach(es).” Best line in the review. This album’s about a band not doing what they’re told – that’s rock n’ roll, brother.
