i enjoyed the video, but i hope the album isn’t all ambient like this song. though i suppose nothing short of antics vol. 2 will make me happy. but i’m trying really hard to keep my expectations low, so that maybe i’ll be pleasantly surprised.
carlos d almost gave my friend herpes.
i feel like at this point, if you don’t know about MIA’s political stances and don’t get the allegory that she is making her between the arbitrary murder of redheads and the killing of the tamil people in sri lanka, where she is from, maybe you should do a quick google search before dismissing it. MIA has been very very vocal for years about this. for people who have followed her music for the past almost 10 years, it is easy to see the point she is making.
clearly you are not one of those people since you actually said, “what exactly is she political about?”
that is totally what i was thinking for most of this video! how is coppercab going to react to this?
of course, i also understand that this is a serious video, an allegory for those in power rounding up and killing, or even just harrassing, groups of people based on superficial differences, which totally happens in places all over the world to greater and lesser degrees.
@christrash, 1. MIA has had a notoriously difficult time with visas and things with the u.s. apparently the u.s. government doesn’t like her political stances any more than you do. 2. when has MIA done anything subtly? that absolutely not her style, nor has she ever claimed it to be.
funny story, in ancient rome, thumbs up actually was the signal to go ahead and kill the gladiator that you had just beaten. thumbs down meant that the defeated gladiator got to live to fight another day. it’s so easy to get things confused between 2000 years ago and right now! [that was a little sarcastic.] but no worries! even if you downvoted me on purpose, i’m pretty much an adult and i can take it.
it’s okay to not like a band! i do it all the time! it took me a minute to get into the xx, but then i listened to them on a loop for about 2 weeks. so perhaps they’ve brainwashed me…
we don’t all have to like a band just because stereogum says so. also, it seems like the commenter dynamic is so different here from videogum. i have a hard time telling if people are trying to be funny or whatever, too. but i was being totally sincere. i really do love this band and this video. i think they’re just lovely.
i love it! this is my favourite xx song. a very beautiful video to accompany it.

seriously! i want the younger, irresponsible, better looking [circa aha shake heartbreak], more irresponsible KOL back. i miss the songs about drunken debauchery and trannies.
