beautiful record (breaking news: no duh). my only issue with it is also the 8 tracks, 37:29 run time.

one of two things is going on here. Either Radiohed is pulling another In Rainbows-style disc 2 trick, and that supplemental disc will be available with the hard copies in March, thus making fans double pay for the full album OR we’ve reached a point where Radiohead releases eight songs every four years and the music community freaks out like it’s God’s bukaki.

either way, lame on Radiohead, no offense to the hipsters.

wtf no Culture Club’s Karma Chameleon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YO8HS394LeY)?

Beavis: Hey look it’s Debbie Gibson!

Butthead: This video needs some car accidents.

Butthead: Hey Beavis, is this supposed to be like, in the future?
Beavis: The future sucks. Change it.
Butthead: I’m pretty cool, Beavis, but I can’t change the future.

agreed. if you’re going to do this feature, i think the reviews should either occur almost immediately after one another (giving two opinions on a big new release), or go the opposite direction and take a fresh look at London Calling or something. As of right now, i agree with the hipster douche comments.

i find it especially insulting that the writer ends the piece with, “you should really be listening to these other two records that I really liked.” —- like, i’m pretty ambivalent about the titus andronicus record, and i really think The National should rename themselves “The Hipster Version of the Wallflowers” (sorry but i super don’t get that band… they bore the living shit out of me).

so even if i cared for the rest of the review, the end totally undercuts any salient points the writer might be making, because really all he’s saying is, “I didn’t like this record as much as some other records that came out this year.”

and i really don’t need an entire quasi-review telling me that.

I could not agree more. One of the things that attracted me to stereogum in the first place was the lack of pitchfork-esque pretension.

This feature belongs on pitchfork, except that it is so ridiculous, even pitchfork wouldn’t touch it. It’s a terrible idea. It’s poorly executed. Worst of both worlds.

Here’s a newsflash – the cool thing about reviews is that most of the time people are reading about an album they haven’t heard yet. Readers use reviews as one tool to help them decide which albums to buy. Reviewing an album six months after it has come out, when most people have already made up their minds about it, is just mining for controversy and stirring up trouble.

And maybe that drives pageviews and comments. Probably it does. But even if it works, it’s a cheap ploy, and I really think it’s well below the standards of this quality music blog.

also, for the record – i like, but don’t love, the arcade fire. It doesn’t offend me to hear someone rip this album. But if you’re going to do this feature and really do it, fucking dig deep and re-review real classics with a fresh take or something. This is ridiculous.

the leak that’s floating around online doesn’t have every track and the tracks it does have aren’t in the right order, unless someone has a link to a leak i haven’t found yet.

If you’re talking best song bowie ever had a writing credit on, it’s gotta be Iggy Pop’s Lust for Life, hands down.

If you want the weirdest, funnest, strangest cut Bowie ever threw down, it’s his cover of See Emily Play on Pinups. His cover of Let’s Spend the Night Together is rad too.

But for my money, if i have to pick one Bowie track, it’s gotta be It Ain’t Easy. It’s got the silly verses and the hard rocking chorus. It’s just a real great song.
