Yikes. I have a feeling Lena probably wish she could take back her comments until AFTER the show. They played a brilliant set in Williamsburg, spanning their entire discography. No bite lost at all.
What people confuse for a band being uninspired or safe, I see as a band recognizing the stable place they’re in musically, professionally, and personally. At some point, successful bands have to leave the wallowing behind. Gibbard is a happily married man with secure band mates with thousands of Twitter followers. At some point, they can’t keep ending 6-minute epics with lines like, “I need you so much closer.” It just would feel forced, unrealistic, and pathetic. Nothing wrong with the angsty kids we loved growing up into satisfied adults. Well done, gentlemen. Enjoy LA.
One way to judge the greatness of a song is its ability to be covered by other artists. This is a winner. Which is a credit to Coldplay, not a knock against them.
I love Coldplay. I love this. This is the type of single that will propel their live festival shows this summer.
Feel free to join me as I lose my mind dancing while you stiffly stand analyzing production values of the King of Limbs.
Clearly, this aesthetic isn’t for everyone. Coldplay is a pop band making pop music. But if you’re satisfied with not giving so much of a damn, this song is everything you’d want. This song is another success. Can’t wait.
I’d forgotten they were breaking up. God, these guys were good. Saw them at Terminal 5. One of the few times I was convinced I was going to pass out. Great night of music.
Wolf Parade never felt like a band to me. They were great musicians that came together under the name Wolf Parade and remarkably made a classic in Queen Mary and gave the obligatory followups. But they never came off like a unit that creatively should last. I’m thankful they made the records they did and I wish them all success in the future.
I can’t even get excited for the new Coldplay song tomorrow because of this.
A friend sent me this link yesterday on Twitter, knowing I’m a big Coldplay fan. But while I won’t try to defend myself, I will say #6 was the Strokes. And #7 was Radiohead.
So let’s not pretend Stereogum fanboys are getting anymore action than the rest of us.
Ms. Lauryn Hill. Elbow. And Fiona Apple.

But is it as formulaic as a disapproving comment on a Coldplay song that references U2?
