Well, what did most of you guys write in and vote. I know we all did. We all had to vote for 3 or 5 albums right? My five were Passion Pit, Phoenix, St. Vincent, The Decemberists, and Thrice. I didn’t try to be “indie hipster” about it. I wrote in exactly what I listened to the most this year. Animal Collective really doesn’t draw me in. Grizzly Bear was good but not “oh my gosh I want to listen to it everyday” great. I couldn’t care less about The Dirty Projectors. I think Andrew Bird deserves to be higher. What’s wrong with Brand New? They aren’t a teenager band really at all. They may tilt towards a punkish sound but lyrics are something a 28 year old like myself can relate to. Same with Thrice.
Although, he didn’t need to post it 6 times, I agree totally regarding Passion Pit. It’s my top album of the year. Whoever said TV On The Radio really needs to brush up on their music knowledge and is obviously not that big of a fan. I also think The Decemberists new album is better than a lot of the album on that list as is Thrice’s new album, Andrew Bird, The Horrors, Paper Route, Pearl Jam, Peter Bjorn & John, The Thermals, and William Elliott Whitmore. I’ve also loved the new Russian Circles and Mono albums but don’t know how to gauge them against music with vocals.
Yeah, this song sounds amazing. I loved Rook. Definitely an album I’m looking forward to.
These new songs really suck.
Well, for one thing, it’s the catchiest electro-pop album I’ve ever heard. It’s a fantastic record all around. St. Vincent is in my top 10 and I want to marry her but Passion Pit is far and away my number 1 album of the year. I’m just wondering where The Decemberists are on that list. Also, Paper Route and Thrice released their best records this year. Of course, Thrice has no indie cred even though they are awesome. There are rules.
Every year everyone gets so excited about their favorite bands releasing new albums and every year the best albums of that year are always bands that come out of nowhere. Case in point, the last 2 years have seen Passion Pit, Fleet Foxes, and Bon Iver and that’s just a small example. There have been a lot of really good albums this year including Phoenix, St. Vincent, The Decemberists, and Andrew Bird but none of those even come close to rivaling my love for Passion Pit this year.
I concur, the song is fantastic in general. Very underrated band.
I love her.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Ten isn’t their best album. Vs. was better than Ten and Vitalogy was better than Vs. Personally I think Yield is one of their crowning achievements but it sickens me everytime I hear or see someone say Ten is their best album. It’s a damn good record but it’s top heavy and depressing. Why is Pearl Jam on here? People ask… because Pearl Jam one of the most influential bands of the 90′s and every indie band we like out there grew up listen to them. I was 11 years old when I first heard Even Flow and it changed my life. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, STP, Smashing Pumpkins… those were the bands that shaped my teen years. Of all those bands, Pearl Jam is the only one that is still relevant and making good music. So, I say thank you Stereogum for posting Pearl Jam on here.
Is it wrong of me to not be interested in this band simply because of their band name? 5 words max for a band name and that’s only if “of, the, or and” are in the title. Aside from the fact that the album cover from their self-titled lp looked like a Belle & Sebastian rip-off.
I still think she’s awesome all the same. I love both her albums. She has a quirky sound that’s not difficult to listen to and her lyrics are great. Normal is relative. With the exception of 1901 and Little Secrets, this is one of my favorite songs this year.

I’d like to see the Play Counts on all of Pitchfork staff’s iPods. Seriously, I think that’s a great way to judge what your favorite album is. I can’t imagine any of them listened to Animal Collective the most. If I listen to something repeatedly, that normally means I love. I can tell you I listened to Pearl Jam and Thrice more than Animal Collective. You can get lambasted for saying that in many indie circles. These lists get overly pretentious. Am I not allowed to love The Decemberists, Grizzly Bear, Passion Pit, Thrice, Russian Circles, and Brand New? We all forget that most people in the real world look at us weird when we mention bands they’ve never heard of.
