perhaps I'm just not willing to call this a performance piece.

You're not going to get anywhere if you keep referring to our (my) perspective as 'shut up and dance'. I can't speak for everyone, but that is absolutely not what I'm saying.

Anytime you use the phrase 'do you realize that?' there's a pretty good chance you're being condescending. And from what I understand, he still walked off before the end of his set.

"And keeps his opinions and politics to himself like a good wind up monkey." Did I say anything of the sort? in fact I've said many times already that he can still make his point and still perform a full set. And yes, 6 songs is decent for a 30 minute set. Nowhere am I saying that artists shouldn't express themselves. They obviously should. That's your mischaracterization of what we're actually saying.

Agreed, but all the examples you gave are people using their art. And the audiences were dissatisfied with the art. I personally think it's a stretch to call FJM's lecture as art. Not in any meaningful sense anyway.

Exactly! Ironically, bored in the u.s.a. Makes his point so much better, while still being his own art, and not being condescending.

Ha ha! Don't be ridiculous. I don't think anybody is upset he made a point, I don't think anybody entirely disagrees with his point. It's all in the delivery though. "Don't make us think! Don't make us feel!". That's precisely why it comes off as so condescending. You don't think we fucking think and feel all day about this shit? Not to mention our own personal lives? We do. Of course we do. And if Tillman wanted to use his ART (you know, music, at a music festival). To express that dissatisfaction and anxiety, we would appreciate it! It could be cathartic! He's also obviously free to say what he wants up there, and it may be appreciated. But don't talk down to your audience. Don't tell them that what they are there to appreciate is stupid, especially if you're paid to be there and provide that very thing. No one is saying he should be silenced. Only show some respect.

Look, he was being paid to perform his own art! If his art is too empty that's his own fault. (I don't think it is, btw). And besides, escapism is crucial. It's not just a distraction, it's how we stay sane. And unless Tillman hasn't enjoyed any entertainment in the past days, or past week, well, that would make him a bit of a hypocrite, wouldn't it? Like I said below, he still could have made his point, which in many ways is valid, but still respect his audience and venue enough to play a full set.

He could have still played a full set and got his point across. And also without being so condescending to his audience. Still a FJM fan, btw.

When I saw future islands, during waiting on you, Sam was visibly getting more and more upset/intense. When the song ended he tore into one of the security guys for mistreating a woman in the crowd. It was actually pretty great.

Not an artistic statement, just a statement. And there lies the issue.
