There was no way a Pope was going to magically be elected that was pro gay marriage and pro contraception and pro abortion and pro all those other things. Just wasn't going to happen. BUT, he is very passionate about the poor and has dedicated his life to trying to benefit the poor. Seriously, what good cause are any of us passionate about that we've worked a fraction as hard for as this guy has worked for the poor? AND he's totally cool with admonishing the church when they try to regulate peoples' worship or exploit their followers instead of providing a place of spiritual nourishment. Basically, it could have been worse, and it seems like they actually made a pretty good choice. Also, and I say this as someone who is a very strong supporter of gay marriage, but NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE CENTERED AROUND GAY MARRIAGE, especially when focusing on a subject like the urban or third world poor. I guess I'll say that I'm hopeful and you can bite me.
Can we set aside for a moment the delusion that we really care about 6 million starving babies and poor people for a while? I mean, really we don't so let's not act like it. 6 million is a lot. And if we cared we wouldn't be wasting our time on here, we'd be busy making them frittatas or something, I don't know, I haven't thought hard enough about it to think about what I'd do about it and neither have you because we really don't care. Can't it be enough that we care for those around us and take care of them and look out for them well enough? And can't it be enough that we care about them enough and like them enough to be able forward them a video of a turtle with a prosthetic leg without having to feel guilty about people we've never met? Because it should be.
And also, why is it my fault that Roger Ebert decided to live an obviously unhealthy life that leads to things like cancers, surgeries and the eventual loss of your jaw in later years? I didn't cause it, I'm just pointing it out. You know, kinda like he did with Ryan Dunn and his life decisions.
That's the other situation, facetaco. I'll fully concede I'm the dickhead in the situation of the grumpy commenter who doesn't matter on an obscure site that doesn't matter versus the obscure site that doesn't matter case. But not in the celebrity with hundreds of thousands of followers who made dickhead comments about someone who died knowing full well they'd get back to the mourners but did it anyway and then tried to backpedal on those comments because he doesn't understand how social media and celebrity works case.
Listen, I think we can all agree that the dickhead in this situation is Ebert (the situation between Ebert and the vulnerable and hurt mourners of Ryan Dunn, not the situation between Gabe and my user account), who is definitely not the best. Again, nobody wanted to find out what Roger Ebert had to say about this, nobody cared. He stuck his comments out there and he hurt some mourners because he didn't take the time to remember that people mourning a friend (no matter how they were lost) deserve to remember their friend in peace without people plastering their opinion (wrong or right) all over the place in a way that could hurt them.
Long story short, today Roger Ebert has more in common with the Westboro Baptist Church than he probably he expected he ever would and for that I offer him a nice big "fuck you, asshole".
He's not dead, so it's not EVEN MORE inappropriate. Now if I made a twitter comment after he died saying "glad someone finally took his feeding tube out and took him out to pasture" where his wife could see it (or maybe "friends don't let fat, old assholes get face-cancer"), then THAT would be even more inappropriate. See, because he'd be dead (like Ryan Dunn is now) and I'd be making an unfunny joke (just like Ebert did) about it.
And even if he was or was not dead, what difference does it make? I can show you a hundred posts on here (either by Gabe or by commenters) that say "well, people die every day and so how is this guy dying any more tragic?" Well, people die every day, and it's not really all that tragic according this website, so how is making jokes (unfunny ones, even) all that insensitive? Either death is tragic and we should be sad every time someone dies, or STFU when you say it isn't but get offended when someone jokes that they wish someone else would die.
I like the guy, but he's turned into a bit of a troll lately. everyone knows what Dunn did was stupid and they don't need Ebert to point that out or make smartass comments while his friends are still grieving. I'm not saying i disagree with him, just that he needs to stfu. "Oh why thank you Roger Ebert for pointing out that drinking and driving is dangerous! The fact that our friend did that (still officially unconfirmed, btw) and it cost him his life wasn't enough of a hard lesson, so you pointing it out on Twitter and being a dickhead was exactly what we needed at this time."
Someone remove Ebert's feeding tube please, it's time for him to be taken out to pasture
