Finally, a new Coldplay song that's single worthy. Here's to hoping the rest of the album is decent.
Also, thank you Stereogum for continuing to report on Coldplay even though everyone is always hating on them in the comments section.
When I hear all of Justin Vernon's side projects they just don't compare to Bon Iver. I'm convinced this guy should have complete creative control over everything he does. And James Blake is always a yawn. Still, this could have been worse.
I'm probably alone in this, but I really wish I could enjoy his voice more. The songwriting is awesome, "Vomit" and "Forgiveness" are particularly great, but I can't get into it as much as I'd like. The vocals are so meh.
Yeah undermythumb, you're a complete idiot. To tell people to stop being philosophical is to tell people to quit thinking and it seems like you have. To cast aside an intensely poetic and cathartic genre of music like hip-hop simply because some artists are ignorant losers is as ignorant as it gets. Language is only offensive if you make it offensive. There is nothing inherently evil about the word "nigger" or "fuck." It's all based in how it is used. Also, there isn't a single song in the world that is universally accessible. To me, Katy Perry isn't accessible because it sucks. And the Rolling Stones aren't really great for children to listen to either. It's not the word "fuck" that is a problem but rather the message of the song. The Stones are quite a sexist band if you haven't noticed.
To claim that there is nothing to read into in Kanye's MBDTF is simply foolish. The very name of the album suggests that he knows his fantasy/reality is twisted. Many of the songs are peppered with or solely composed of very introspective and sad lyrics. You must have skipped "Runaway," "Blame Game," "Gorgeous," and big chunks of other tracks on your first listen. Or maybe you didn't even listen to it at all. It's highly creative. Where the fuck has music like that been produced before? He does not come across as uneducated: you do. Kanye's music often works on two levels and you're missing the deeper one entirely, probably because you think it's bogus to think philosophically about a hip-hop album. Kanye's aware of his own "sophisticated ignorance" which I think actually makes him an intelligent man. You need to quite commenting on something you know nothing about.
I've got to agree that compared to last year 2011 has been a bit weak. I still think it's been a good year in music. There's always more that I like than I get time to listen to. And nice putting EMA at #1. That's definitely been under appreciated.
1. Just because the Bon Iver album was released today doesn't mean it hasn't already been floating around the internet for a month: it has.
2. The year ended "only weeks" after MBDTF was released so they had to judge it then.
Besides, both of these albums are fantastic. I'll gladly join those bandwagons.
