CMJ 2011: Class Superlatives & Our Finest Photos

We’re on the other side of CMJ now, which you could probably tell by the uptick in the music news cycle, or by some bloggers’ (could be any bloggers, no way to know who I am talking about) bleary eyes and corresponding level of risibility. Stereogum threw a couple of parties early on, then shifted… More »

The 5 Best Videos Of The Week

The two highest-profile videos of the week were almost certainly Rihanna’s “We Found Love” and Coldplay’s “Paradise.” I didn’t put either video on this list. I didn’t leave them out because they’re pop videos; I’m absolutely happy to show love to a great pop video. But both of those videos seemed forced, in opposite directions. More »

Friends – “I’m His Girl” Video

The Brooklyn Band To Watch Friends now has a video for the catchy-as-hell bubblefunk single “I’m His Girl,” and I’m not dissing at all when I call it Kreayshawn-esque. The whole thing, with its fashionably retro camerawork and its energetic portrayal of too-cool New York street life, works as a sort of East Coast take… More »

Friends – “My Boo” (Ghost Town DJ’s Cover)

It’s a nice moment for “My Boo” redos. Last month Balam Acab pitched “My Boo” through his distended down-tempo filter, giving the upbeat bass music classic a strange spectral wobble. Today, Ghost Town DJ’s are honored via MP3 by Friends, as the b-side to the band’s recently posted single “I’m His Girl.” The track make… More »

Friends – “I’m His Girl”

Band To Watch Friends posted their new track “I’m His Girl” earlier today in advance of its Halloween release. It’s a Lykke Li-like groove accented by hand percussion and instilled with a warm liveliness. More »

Friends – “Friend Crush” Video (Stereogum Premiere)

It’s “ESG-style polyrhythmic post-disco on a tropical-pop trip” that Bushwick BTW Friends fix on musically, and their visual aesthetic — both onstage, and in this their debut, Matthew Caron-directed clip — is perfectly triangulated to fit the bill. Diaphanous silhouettes of singer Samantha Urbani float over the band bathed in florid color palettes and VHS… More »

Friends – “Friend Crush (Phone Tag Remix)”

Brooklyn-via-Texas project Phone Tag was one of the scene compatriots Friends name-checked in their BTW piece, which was a kind plug while also being another illustration of the universal law that friends tend toward phone tag. Here the two hook up on a remix of Friends’ excellent lead single “Friend Crush,” wherein Phone Tag eliminate… More »

Stereogum Monthly Mix: April 2011

April’s mix is female heavy and thematically clustered. It tips off with a track from each of our three most recent Bands To Watch. The remainder features a few songs that are numerically fixated (Brenmar’s “Be The One,” the return of pulseprogramming with “First They Fire,” and Italians Do It Better boss Mike Simonetti’s “Third… More »

Band To Watch: Friends

After WU LYF’s post-midnight US debut at Glasslands Friday night, folks slipped into the venue next door, 285 Kent St., to catch the tail-end of a bill anchored by the band Friends. It was an impressive, infectious set — ESG-style polyrhythmic post-disco on a tropical-pop trip, with some Lykke Li in the mix — from… More »

Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Joey

“You know the difference between Friends and the John Kerry campaign? Friends has a theme.”

And I’ll be so happy not to hear that stupid theme song anymore (clap! clap! clap!). Sorry Phil Solem. At least you made a ton of dough. Although I wonder, does anybody else remember “Johnny Have You Seen Her”? More »
