Vivian Girls – “I Heard You Say” & Share The Joy Info

Vivian Girls’ new album Share The Joy was recorded at Rear House, the studio run by Woods’s Jarvis Taveniere, who engineered the collection. It’s their first with new drummer Fiona Campbell. (Remember, old drummer Ali Koehler joined Best Coast.) To hear Vivian Girls 2011, download “I Heard You Say” at Polyvinyl. If you want to… More »

La Sera – “Devils Hearts Grow Gold”

Last week when we posted a new track by the Babies, the project of Vivian Girls’ Cassie Ramone and Woods’ Kevin Morby, we also reminded you about another VG spin-off, Katy Goodman’s La Sera. In case your memory was getting hazy, here’s “Devils Hearts Grow Gold,” a track from Goodman’s forthcoming La Sera debut. It’ll… More »

The Babies – “Wild I”

I don’t think Cassie Ramone and Kevin Morby’s Vivian Girls/Woods spinoff the Babies’ “Wild I” is a play on VG’s “Wild Eyes” — that’s a Roman one not an “I.” Though who knows. The song appears on a limited-edition 7″ with “Wild II” called The Wilds. It’s also included on the band’s self-titled Shrimper debut. More »

La Sera (Vivian Girls Side Project) – “Never Come Around”

Vivian Girls’ Katy Goodman, aka Kickball Katy, has a new side project — in addition to All Saints Day, her collaboration with Gregg Foreman. La Sera, billed as a solo effort, has the same fuzzy Spector feel of her other work, though it’s smearier and cleaner in an early ’90s SpinART/Slumberland way. Take a liste… More »

ATP NY 2010: Sleep, Sunn, Skinny Dipping

At this point people know what to expect from Kutscher’s: The faded Catskills resort’s crumbling walls held together by mold, broken everything (we were forced to do our own DIY toilet plumbing, heard about another one that flushed boiling water), that lost-in-time Tammy Faye Makeup Counter. What we didn’t expect was the persistent skinny dipping… More »

Black Lips, Vivian Girls Headline Inaugural Bruise Cruise

The Bruise Cruise is a three-day cruise from Miami to the Bahamas, featuring the Black Lips, Vivian Girls, open bars and gambling. It happens February 25-28, and you should probably make this your honeymoon. It kinda seems expensive at $500 a person, plus $115 fee, but that does include your room and all your meals. More »

Vivian Girls Cover Bowie, Get New Drummer

The Vivian Girls revolving cast of drummers continues. Yesterday, as Sound Of The City noted, the Girls tweeted from the road about a lineup shift: “hey! we have an announcement! we have a new drummer named Fiona! we love ali and we will miss her dearly.” The bespeckled Ali Koehler’s been replaced by Coasting’s Fiona… More »

Titus Andronicus & The Babies Cover “The Sweater Song”

Late last week in Philadelphia, Titus Andronicus and Vivian Girls’ Cassie Ramone gave the Barbary a spirited cover of Weezer’s beloved “Undone – The Sweater Song.” Ramone was there because the Babies, her project with Woods’ Kevin Morby, opened. Titus main man Patrick Stickles nails and ably improvises the guitar solo because he loves Weezer. More »

Vivian Girls & Male Bonding – “Perfect Day” (Lou Reed Cover)

Today’s episode of WBEZ’s Sound Opinions features an interview and in-studio performance from Vivian Girls. The Girls did “Other Girls,” “Surfin’ Away,” and “When I’m Gone” for the show, as well as this cover of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day.” London’s Male Bonding help out — or, really, kind of hurt — in the beginning, but… More »

All Saints Day (Vivian Girls Side Project) – “It’ll Come Around”

Vivian Girls’ Katy Goodman, aka Kickball Katy, and Cat Power keyboardist/guitarist/ex-Delta 72 dude Gregg Foreman have a new project, All Saints Day. The first available track “I’ll Come Around” sounds like Vivian Girls washing up (or Washed Out) on the beach, i.e. it’s warmer and more synthesized than Goodman’s other band. There’s also something MBV,… More »

SXSW 2010: The Wrap Up

We saw a bunch of bands this past week. Not every set was memorable, but there were more than enough highlights to make the stiff necks and barking feet worth it. Here’s Wednesday, Thursday, Gibbarday, and SXSW’s metal shows, and more. This last post contains our notes, and photos from our intrepid photographers — RyanMore »

SXSW 2010: Thursday In Photos

On some nights you can fool yourself into forgetting that industry weeks like SXSW have shifted from being about discovery to being full-on music festivals. Yesterday was not one of those days. Aside from the always-on-point imprint True Panther Sounds’ top-to-bottom burner at Ms. Bea’s — giving us our first look at Hunx and Hi… More »

Vivian Girls Cover The Chantels

All those “girl group” references make even more sense after the Vivian Girls’ cover of the Bronx-born Chantels’ 1957 single “He’s Gone.” Remember, the Chantels are on the 2010 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame nominee list. It’s good to be the Chantels. More »

New Frankie Rose & The Outs – “Thee Only One”

Ex-Vivian Girls drummer (and NYC bartender) Frankie Rose recently made the Crystal Stilts an Ex too, starting her own project, the all-girl quintet Frankie Rose & The Outs. Well, almost all-girl: Crystal Stilts guitarist JB Townsend contributes to their forthcoming single. (The split was clearly amicable.) Rose still keeps her drums skill sharp as a… More »

New Vivian Girls Video – “When I’m Gone”

When Brandon first put his ears on “When I’m Gone,” Vivian Girls’ lead single and runaway standout from their sophomore set Everything Goes Wrong, he heard echoes of Black Tambourine in its “starry, dusky fuzzed-out sounds” and “semi-buried spectral harmonies.” The Girls’ bittersweet lo-fi pop track has a video to follow suit, the trio performing… More »

Bumbershoot 2009 In Photos

At Seattle’s biggest music festival, rain is not unexpected; still, the downpours at Bumbershoot ’09 were scary even for this neck of the Pacific Northwest. No bands got electrocuted, but the sound cut out during Black Eyed Peas’ set, so that’s something. Franz Ferdinand and Modest Mouse were huge draws as the three-day event came… More »

New Babies – “Meet Me In The City”

According to their MySpace, Babies is the project of Vivian Girls’ Cassie Ramone, Woods bassist Kevin Morby, Bossy drummer Justin Sullivan, and Stupid Party’s Nathanael Stark on bass. All that said, it’ll largely be the songwriting project of Morby, because bassists need side projects. Take a listen to the shambling guitar-pop howler “Meet Me I… More »

New Vivian Girls – “The End,” “Can’t Get Over You”

When I’m Gone,” the first song we heard from Vivian Girls’ forthcoming sophomore album Everything Goes Wrong, found the trio digging into a denser sound with additional vocal polish in those still decidedly unpolished three-part harmonies. Two additional samples of the new stuff — the clattering, dusky “The End” and the sweeter “Can’t Get Over… More »
