The 5 Best Songs Of The Week

Yesterday we launched our new Week In Pop column, so it’s fittingly (if unintentionally) ironic that our list of the week’s five best songs is, for once, basically devoid of “pop music.” In fact, three of this week’s five best are decidedly, demonstrably, actual rock. Nice to have some loud guitars to help keep u… More »

Wild Beasts – “Wanderlust” Video

British art-poppers Wild Beasts released their last album, Smother, in 2011, and since then, we’ve only heard a few stray tracks and remixes from the band. But now they’ve debuted a swollen, spacey new track called “Wanderlust,” sharing a video for the song. The clip, directed by the Barcelona collective NYSU, shows four broad archetype… More »

Hayden Thorpe & Jon Hopkins – “Goodbye Horses” (Q Lazzarus Cover)

Wild Beast’s Hayden Thorpe and Jon Hopkins have joined forces to cover Q Lazzarus’s classic electro-pop track “Goodbye Horses.” While most people know the cut as Buffalo Bill’s mirror-dance soundtrack from Silence Of The Lambs, it’s not immediately recognizable, as the two have turned it into a frank and lucid ballad. This version will appear… More »

2:54 – “You’re Early (Wild Beasts Remix)” (Stereogum Premiere)

You’re Early” is the swirling new single from sisterly British BTW 2:54. And on the single’s B-side, the UK art-rock wailers Wild Beasts rework the track, replacing the bassline with a foggy synthetic bed and giving Wild Beasts frontman Hayden Thorpe room to croon in the cracks. Listen to it below. More »

End Of The Road Festival 2011 In Photos

Last week, the UK’s Larmer Tree Gardens hosted a hilariously deep bill for the End Of The Road Festival, a lineup that featured Joanna Newsom, Kurt Vile, Tinawiren, Lykke Li, Best Coast, the Walkmen and dozens of other notables. Elena Morelli was there to magnificently document the epic lineup. There’s a peacock in one of… More »

Lady Gaga – “Yoü And I (Wild Beasts Remix)”

File this under “whuh?,” but a remix of Lady Gaga’s “Yoü And I” by British soft rockers Wild Beasts surfaced this morning. Those familiar with the Beasts’ work can certainly discern the band’s influences on the treatment of the track, which weaves in a lot of atmosphere and a spare piano line. Check it out… More »

Wild Beasts – “Loop The Loop”

You’ve probably heard Smother by now, and read about some of the songs that inspired it. “Loop The Loop”‘s one of the best songs on Smother, and, it turns out, one of the band’s favorite songs on the album too. In an interview about the song for NPR, Thorpe said this about “Loop The Loop”:… More »

Wild Beasts Smother Under The Influence

Hopefully by now you’ve heard Smother, the third album from Wild Beasts. As with all their records, it feels like it comes out of nowhere. And as always, I have trouble finding reference points to give people when recommending them (Antony? Talking Heads?). That’s why I asked the band to talk about some of the… More »

Wild Beasts – Smother Premature Evaluation

Wild Beasts were winking at us when they gave us a song named “Albatross,” the slow-moving and slinky first single from the band’s third album. Hayden Thorpe’s impossibly pretty falsetto was there, as were the band’s hypnotic, looping drums, but something felt muted, missing. It made you worry for the rest of the record. Listening… More »

Wild Beasts – “Albatross”

Wild Beasts just announced their third album, Smother, and BBC1 Radio debuted the first single “Albatross,” last night on Zane Lowe’s show. From what I’ve heard Smother will be a mellower, subtler version of their sound (depraved rock/funk cabaret). Richard Formby, who co-produced their last album Two Dancers, also co-produced this record. Singers Hayden Thorpe… More »

Photos From ATP Bowlie 2 Curated By Belle & Sebastian

The Belle & Sebastian-curated ATP Bowlie 2 took place earlier this week (December 10-12) at Butlins Holiday Centre, Minehead. (In 1999 B&S curated The Bowlie Weekender, which ultimately became All Tomorrow’s Parties, hence the “2”.) The event featured 40 bands picked by the Scottish pop ensemble and, according to photographer Elena Morelli, a bunch of… More »

Junior Boys, OPN Remix Wild Beasts

It didn’t win the Mercury Prize, but Wild Beasts’s Two Dancers still has a lot of juice left in it a year after its release date. Domino Records is releasing two remix 12-inches, including remixes of the title track, “The Fun Powder Plot,” and “This Is Our Lot” this November. Hayden Thorpe’s voice is so… More »

Outside Lands 2010 In Photos

When we posted the Outside Lands festival lineup, we mentioned how the San Fransisco festival tried to fit it “between a jam and a rock space,” especially with Further (featuring the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir and Phil Lesh) and the Strokes headlining on Saturday. According to our photographer Graeme Flegenheimer there was a hippie/hipster divide… More »

Wild Beasts were just nominated for the Mercury Prize, and they’re on tour again, so their label Domino is celebrating with this new EP featuring their single “We Still Got The Taste Dancin’ On Our Tongues,” an acoustic version of “The Devil’s Crayon,” a Jon Hopkins remix of “Two Dancers,” and this rare Japanese b-side… More »
