Parakeet – “Shonen Hearts”

When she’s not playing bass in Yuck, Mariko Doi leads her own fuzzed-out ’90s-style alt-pop project Parakeet. We’ve already heard Parakeet tracks like “Tomorrow” and “Paper, Scissors, Stone,” and the latest one is “Shonen Hearts,” which turns effects-pedal roar into sugary pop. Listen to it below. More »

Yuck – “Chew”

Yuck will be at Coachella this weekend and next, and have lined up a few Cali dates in between. This song’s release is most certainly timed as a ploy to raise awareness for these dates — so be aware of them — but it is also a very good song in its own right for… More »

Parakeet – “Tomorrow” Video (Stereogum Premiere)

A couple of months ago, we heard a cut called “Tomorrow” from Yuck bassist Mariko Doi who dwells under the name Parakeet in this particular solo jaunt. Today, that track has a video, which utilizes two always-effective music video motifs: a nicely-shot performance clip and smoke machines. Watch the Babanuki-directed clip below. More »

Yuck – “Natsu Nandesu”

As a bonus track on the Japanese edition of their self-titled debut album, British fuzz-rockers Yuck included a cover of “Natsu Nandesu,” a 1971 song from the Japanese folk-rock band Happy End. Yuck’s slightly-grungier version features a lead vocal from bassist Mariko Doi, and it’s her first time singing lead on a Yuck song. Liste… More »

Yuck – “Soothe Me”

British ’90s-indie revivalists Yuck have just posted a new track called “Soothe Me” on their blog. Compared to the tracks on the band’s self-titled debut, it’s a mellow sprawler, and we can actually hear Daniel Blumberg’s accent for once. Listen below. More »

Stereogum’s 40 Best New Bands of 2011

Last year, right around the time summer turned to fall, we at Stereogum published our list of the 40 best new bands of the year. The idea of a “new” band is a pretty nebulous one, since many of the kids we listed were probably planning out their musical ventures in their basements since they… More »

Download Stereogum’s Cruel Summer 2011 Mix

Here’s the sequel to last year’s popular heartbreak of a mixtape, Cruel Summer. That one was worn, forlorn, and sexual, it was the soundtrack arc to your winter romance burning up and melting in the hot, hormonal sun. This year it’s just a party, really, soundtracked once again by some of the very best and… More »

Yuck – “Milkshake”

It’s surprising it took a British band this long to come up with a name that plays on “UK” as simply as “Yuck” — and also somewhat ironic since the band Yuck looks so far away (at the US circa the ’90s in particular) for inspiration. Their self-titled debut is either a delight or annoyance… More »

The UK’s best ’90s indie rock band also to have been born in the ’90s have released a b-side to the “Get Away” single. The “Get Away” single is a very good one, as is the band’s reverently styled, well written debut LP Yuck. Grab a HandiCam, some sun, a flannel, a car ride around… More »
