Majical Cloudz – “Are You Alone?”

"Silver Car Crash," the first single from Majical Cloudz's new album Are You Alone?, drew heavily from the Smiths' "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out." The project's title track has now arrived via Pitchfork, and it bears the even heavier influence of a different old classic. Devon Welsh repeatedly interpolates snippets of Radiohead's Kid A closer "Motion Picture Soundtrack," nicking lyrics and melody alike to the point that "Are You Alone?" could almost pass for a cover with lots of creative license. But no, Majical Cloudz have carved out one of music's most distinctive aesthetics, and this beautiful music is unmistakably their work -- eerie synths, piercing baritone, the lingering sense of clinging to your loved ones in the face of doom.
