Georgia – “everything i wanted” (Billie Eilish Cover)

This year, the first artist to earn an Album Of The Week designation from Stereogum was the London dance-pop musician Georgia Barnes. Seeking Thrills, Barnes’ sophomore album, is full of incandescent and life-affirming jams. And while Barnes lives somewhere on the indie continuum, she’s not shy about playing around with big-time pop music. In a visit to the BBC Live Lounge earlier this year, for instance, Georgia got together with House Gospel Choir and covered Lil Nas X’s “Panini.” Today, she’s also shared her take on Billie Eilish’s hushed dance-pop ballad “everything i wanted.”

Coming from Billie Eilish, “everything i wanted” is a stark, heavy song about fame and shyness and the need for personal connection. Georgia is not currently scarily famous, but she still dials into the soft intimacy of the song. She also does cool things with the arrangement, making it a kind of tasteful, orchestral house track.

Georgia’s “everything i wanted” cover comes from her new Spotify Single, which also includes a live-in-studio version of her own track “About Work The Dancefloor.” Georgia recorded both songs at London’s Abbey Road Studios, and with the way the strings pile on, it really sounds like the kind of thing that might come from Abbey Road.
