In 2018, Aimee Mann revealed she was working on songs for a stage musical adaptation of Susanna Kaysen's 1993 memoir Girl, Interrupted. A few years later, she released Queens Of The Summer Hotel, an album of the songs she'd made for the musical. Last fall, we found out the musical was still happening, helmed by playwright Martyna Majok and director Jo Bonney and slated for May at New York's Public Theater. Now we're finally getting details about the cast, which has King Princess making her theatre debut.
Girl, Interrupted is about Kaysen's time at a psychiatric hospital in the '60s, and in 1999 James Mangold turned it into a film with Winona Ryder playing Susanna and Angelina Jolie as Susanna's troubled friend Lisa. King Princess (born Mikaela Straus) will be playing Lisa. Last year, King Princess acted in Craig Brewer's musical film Song Sung Blue and the Hulu series Nine Perfect Strangers.
Meanwhile, Juliana Canfield (Stereophonic, Succession) will play Susanna, alongside Emily Skinner (Suffs) as Dr. Wick, Ta'Rea Campbell as Valerie, Gabi Campo as Tori, Mano Felciano as Man, Mia Pak as Grace, Katherine Reis as Daisy, Sally Shaw as Polly, and Lauren Jeanne Thomas as Judy.
The production will take the stage at Martinson Hall from May 13 to June 21. Opening night will be June 4.
