Fol Chen – “In Ruins (Keepaway Remix)”

Earlier this month, masked L.A. sextet Fol Chen dropped the unexpectedly joyous, primordially percussive post-apocalyptic dance jam “In Ruins,” navigating a world covered in ash and acid rain with a trip to find lost love at the dance club. Previously loved post-Pavilion psych-pop trio Keepaway give it a spin with this remix, trading the original’s oddly uplifting blurpy synths for more ominously warped buzzes and tripping cut-ups and repetitions, which you can interpret as a proper reflection of the track’s dark storyline, or just a digital experiment from a group of pop experimentalists. Works either way:

Fol Chen’s Part II: The New December is out 6/6 via Asthmatic Kitty. The band still has a few dates left on their tour with Liars (see below).

Keepaway’s Baby Style EP is out via Lefse on 5/18. In the interim they have a couple of great shows coming up next week in NYC, one with Class Actress on Tuesday at the Studio @ Webster Hall, another as part one of the best bills I’ve seen in a couple of weeks at Glasslands with Tanlines, Light Pollution, Memoryhouse, and Small Black side-project Psychobuildings. Don’t miss.

04/27 – San Francisco, CA @ Slim’s*
04/29 – Portland, OR @ Hawthorne Theatre*
04/30 – Vancouver, BC @ Venue*
05/01 – Seattle, WA @ Neumo’s*
