Mogwai is more a "songs" band than an "albums" bands; as said by another person here, they have great songs scattered around all their discography but they really have an album that stand out from the others. If you still have to choose one, I would start with Happy Songs for Happy people which is super cohesive; well produced and does not have any filler. The EP + 10 is also a great way to start. You also have to understand that Mogwai songs could be divided in 3 categories: 1) soft and calm one 2) heavy blow up with distorstion and quiet/loud structure 2) epic build up which mixes soft and loud but still on the soft side Here is a list of songs from them you should check out, individualy, following the categories mentionned (as you can see my favorite mogwai is category 3) -Superheroes of BMX 2) -Burn Girl Prom Queen 1) -Tracy 1) -2 rights makes 1 wrong 3) -Kids will be skeletons 3) -Friends of the Night 3) -Scotland Shame 3) -Special N 3) -Don't Believe the Fife 3) Enjoy!

Yes and yes; Anything was sublime (i have not listened to Songs) but these 2 instrumental tracks sound like guitar practice recorded.

how is it possible not to like I am Easy to Find is beyond me. That album might be too long but all the single are amazing, some of the greatest national track; really suprised that is not often perceive as one of their best

It has some hooks of course (the title track) and that is why i said "most" not all. Regarding the electronic approach and sound, I feel that Sufjan uses electronic for a purpose in Adz, mixing it with folk element; in the ascension, he uses electronics just as a way of making music because he only got a computer to make music (he said it himself in the interview post release, stating he could only bring computer to his cabin, and started goofing around with sound); this is 2 very different approachs

nicely said, I also think it is Sufjan works condensed in a song

From the mouth of gabriel is a top 10 Sufjan's song in my book

I think the difference between Age of Adz and The Ascension is that on Adz, Sufjan is still displaying great little hooks everywhere, it is not only about the electronic instrumentation but also melodies. The last 3 minutes of the age of adz (title track) is a perfect example of that pure brilliance, unfortunately absent from most of the ascension

Oasis music (which for most part consist in strumming the same 4 chords with distorstion over and over) is so bland, now if even the band itself recognize the lyrics are shit, I wonder what is left to like about them

September 30, 2020 on Noel Gallagher Admits “Champagne Supernova” Is Nonsense
Well, this is definitely Sufan mid-life crisis album, a very personal album for sure but a bit of a disappointment for the listener let's face it. Sufjan decided on purpose to mutilate his songs with electronic bleeps and cheap drum machines, which is a shame really since some of these could have been great without this treatment (Landslide and Goodbye to All of that for ex). The album is hard to digest and is such a long mess that you will end up exhausted.I don't necessarily have a problem with Sufan orchestrated mess (I love the BQE for ex) but here all the electronic elements don't really fit with the "angel" voice full of reverb and leave the melody buried in the background. In this chaos, 2 songs are emerging: Runaway with me, a lovely song, probably the most accessible one of the album (with video games) and an obvious choice for a single and, as the premature evaluation stated, The Ascension (title track), probably the most gorgeous song on the album, sublime build up with Sufjan sounding so devastated, sincere and vulnerable. These 2 songs are incredible, but not sure I will go back to the rest of it.

I think the same; also a massive Sufjan fan, but for some reasons i don't really connect with these new songs; they are not bad of course but i don't feel the need and urgency to put them on constant repeat.

this is so beautifull (and i am not even a big thief fan); there is a sense of peace and comfort in the vocal delivery, it is so relaxing, you feel like having a glass of wine while enjoying the summer evening breeze, thinking about life... Crazy how far music can take you

very interesting post; the sufjan I like the most is where he actually mix the 2 sides folk & electronic, like for ex, A loverless Bed, From the mouth of Gabriel, you should have known better, or even Vito's ordination song and upper peninsula have a folk side but with synth in the back giving them a unique hypnotic feel.

Will it be his best work? Probably not but we are lucky to he continues to produce music and experiencing new area; correct me if i am wrong but i don't think this one is similar than any of his other songs, which is nice.

I am happy to see I am not the only one thinking Bon Iver is a bit overrated. Justin is clearly talended, no doubt about that, but it seems collaborating with kanye gave him a cred for life and anything he will put out will be seen as genius. I don't really like the last lps and I don't think these last songs are absolutely amazing

August 6, 2020 on Bon Iver – “AUATC”
up until 4.35 min, it is just a wonderfull song, the rest is just classic Sufjan experimenting with vocoder and electronic, not really my cup of tea, noisy and not really melodic anymore. Its a shame because the build up in the song was promising before the vocoder kicks in

you forgot from the great album The Avalanches, Springfield solo in the middle of the song, and the outro of Pittsfield; these guitar noise may sound silly but i think they bring a lot to the atmosphere of the songs;

i am a little dissappointed to be honest, maybe i was expecting too much, with all the build up, the name, the premiere on you tube. The song reminds impossible soul/age of adz/djokariah but i don't think it's better than those songs; the rest of the album will surely be outstanding but i am not sure what to think of this piece

The vey best Cure song: for some reason, it's not so easy to cover and as said previously in the comment, Bat for Lashes version is probably the best i have heard. For other "unofficial covers", you can also check Bat for Lashes Daniel and The Strokes Trying you luck, both sharing a quite identical bassline

a good album for sure, and one of their best opener (Terrible Love) but ultimatly it's not my favorite of them, I find Boxer, Trouble will find me, and I am easy to find to be more rewarding in the long run. I am a bit surprised how underlook is their last one, which has maybe too many songs but 5/6 of them really top 10 material.

Yes agree; this band clearly navigates in "background music at the mall" territory. As for this song, it sound good I guess but am I the only one wondering where did I already hear this? Sounds very familiar with some 80s stuff
