A while back this girl I work with who is the worst walks up to me and ask me if I like Frank Ocean, because she loves him. I say not really (to be nice, I actually hate him.), and then I say, " I like How To Dress Well though." She's never heard of "them" but will check them out. Another girl that I work with who is awesome looks at me and says, "I bet she hates How To Dress Well." A few days, later she comes back and says she didn't really like them, but she loves Bon Iver. And I have thousands of stories like that. In fact I would say 90% of the time if a person has shitty taste in music they suck. And I'd say if they have great taste in music, there is about a 90% chance they are awesome. As to what is wrong with being straight edge. You should never ever trust someone who can't sit down and have a cocktail like a gentleman.
Have you ever thought that people who like this kind of music are actually cool? i generally have very similar music taste to my friends or the people I become friends with. And I almost always have the exact opposite musical taste as the people I meet who I think suck. Michael_ may be a lot of things, but I think the one thing we can all agree on is that Michael_ is not cool. He's a straight edge whiny pussy who throws hysterical hissy fits on the internet. And thats fine I guess, but it is certainly not cool. Its awful, and I would say, that if you agree with him on a lot, it probably means that your kind of awful as well. So If you don't like synth bands, or don't like Wampire that's fine. But just know that it most likely just means that you're not very cool, and probably tattled on people who cheated on test in high school.
Michael you have such shitty taste in music. This is one of the best bands Stereogum has posted about in months. Way better than nonsense like Waxahatchee. I usually try to ignore you, but your taste is just so awful it kills me. Thank you Stereogum. You guys are doing much better lately. A little post on Heather Woods Broderick and we will be good. (She's really good too Michael, though I'm sure you've never heard of her.)
Well, I meant specifically just the track Rosie Oh sounded like Congratulations. But I get what you mean. Panda Bear and MGMT certainly don't sound the same normally. But I will say that they both are kind of "psychy" and have some wildly great vocal melodies. And yes. The DOM Ep was okay, but this is hot garbage.
I couldn't disagree more. Most people I know hated MGMT's first record and loved Congratulations. As did I. This shit sounds like Passion Pit, and they suck. MGMT's last record sounded more like what Panda Bear did on Rosie Oh. I guess it just depends on who you like more. Panda Bear or Passion Pit.
That's kind of misleading. Taylor Swifts first two singles were co written with Max Martin. Katy Perrys first two singles from her last album were co-written with Max Martin. Christina Aguilera's first single from her last album was co-written with Max Martin. Kesha's firs two singles from her last album Warrior were co-written with Max Martin. Avril Lavignes first two singles from her last album were co- written with Max Martin Britney Spears first two singles from her last album were written by Max Martin. I like Taylor Swift just fine, but Im not really sure how you can say that she is so much different than the rest of the pop star girls??
Melody is generally all I'm concerned with. Its why I like say Ariel Pink, but don't like Frank Ocean. So yes. I'm saying they don't have one good melody that I've heard at least. Baby no, But I would listen to Biebers As Long As You Love Me over both of those songs. The only Kings of Leon song I've ever heard that was any good is Fans, but its still not as good as Biebers- As Long as You Love me, Beyonce's- Love On Top, Katy Perry's- California Girls, or Taylor Swifts Our Song. Also, this article shouldn't be that surprising to anyone. Tom simply has bad taste in music. He wrote a 3 page article about how terrible Animal Collective was years ago. I bet this is genuine and not just for controversy. He really doesn't know what he's talking about.
I'll tell you why their is so much massive hate towards this band and the Kings Of Leon. Because their songs suck. I personally don't care if they write their own songs, I don't care if they play "real instruments", or don't use autotune. I only care about what the songs sound like. And to my ears, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, and Justin Bieber all have much better songs than both bands. Mumford and Sons are Creed and Nickelback status as far as I'm concerned. I'm with stereogum on Beyonce, Crazy in Love is brilliant, and Love On Top is fantastic as well, Taylor Swift is ok but she's not nearly as good as some people have tried to make her out to be. But Mumford and Sons is where I get off the train. I've never heard even one good melody come from these guys, let alone a good song.
*"A small circle with no new niggas"
I actually think this song is influenced by Lil Reese and Chief Keef. Its super repetitive like all their songs, and the "no new niggas" line is definitely taken from Lil Reeses Us, when he says "A small circle with no niggas." That was actually my favorite line of any rap song that came out last year. Drake also was on the remix for the song as well. Also I really like this song and I detest Kendrick Lamar, so I'm gonna go out on limb and say he this is probably his attempt to make his own version of a Chicago Drill song, than it is a Kendrick Lamar song. You should have picked up on this Breihan. Your slippin.
Yeah man. I was there that day. Wasted. And it was great! And everyone was freaking out, as was I. But it was mostly because she's like 5 feet tall and adorable. Had she been fat and black. Nobody would have really given a shit. I'm just sayin.
I actually kind of hated this. Dave's voice was distractingly off key. And they didn't really do anything different with the song. The song is great, so I guess any faithful version will be ok. But even Ambers voice. I mean its fine and all, but If you get excited over every cute white girl with a good voice, then you should be shitting your pants over American Idol every week. Overall. pretty terrible version of an otherwise great song. In other news, that White Noise song by Disclosure is insane!
What the hell are you talking about? Milo goes to College is 22 minutes long. And its awesome! With that said. This album sucks, and it shouldn't be a big surprise. This guy has always been a weak songwriter. The shoegaze part on hellhole rat race and the beach boys background vocals on Laura were able to distract from it. But for the most part he has a terrible sense of melody. And making his vocal melodies the center of songs the way they did on this one was a terrible decision. I mean I thought that Holy Ghost record sucked too, but this is just beyond even that. Hopefully now that people are calling him out for what he is, which is a lazy songwriter, with an obviously very limited record collection, he'll go back and work on his craft a little bit.
You're taste hew closer to MOR stuff, because your taste just isn't very developed yet. If you ever talk to some one who has weird obscure taste in music, they more often than not have an extensive knowledge of music in lot of other genre's as well. And almost always, people with MOR indie taste in music have a really limited knowledge of music. You'll never meet some dude who is like "I really haven't cared for Graham Lambkins post Shadow Ring stuff, I'm actually much more excited about that new Christopher Owens solo record." Dudes who are excited about Christopher Owens or a new Bon iver album. Simply don't know much else.
Wrong. 3hunna is the best rap song of the year by a long shot. Chief Keef is really goodI figured Tom was going to give this album of the week, and Im glad he did, because I was getting a little annoyed that it wasn;t being talked about on this site. His album is better than Kendrik Lamars, by a pretty large amount. This shit is like Mobb Deep 2012. Really scary stuff.
Edit: Tiny Mix Tapes is kind of the best. That Farrah Abraham album is actually really great. You should listen to it before you write it off as a cash grab. And that Vaporwave album by Mediafired was my choice for the #1 album of the year. Its fucking fantastic, and the song Pixes off of it, was my #2 song of the year. They have way better taste than Stereogum to be honest. If you listened to as much music as those guys, and knew as much about it as they did, I bet you would have similar taste. You just don’t listen to as many records as they do. So your taste leans towards the MOR indie that stereogum likes.

Well I will tell you what sets Frank Ocean apart from mainstream R&B. Its subject matter and melodies. Frank Ocean sounds much more like the early 2000's late 90's Love Jones Soundtrack, HBCU R&B, that my sister and her friends loved so much in college. Its basically Neo Soul with a little different subject matter. I personally always hated Neo Soul, and I feel the same way about Frank Ocean. All the Neo Soul singers, John Legend, Lauren Hill, Frank Ocean, seem to be much more influenced by Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway. Who are personally my least favorite soul singers. And the newer soul singers, like The Dream, are much more influenced by people like Prince and R Kelly, who are much better than Wonder or Hathaway. I personally think that Ocean is much worse than the R and B you hear on the radio. Justin Beibers new song is much better than anything on Channel Orange. And The Dream's worst songs are much better than even Oceans best. I think when it comes down to it. Frank Ocean is earnest, where people like The Dream and R kelly really aren't. And I think that appeals to people who generally listen to MOR Indie. That would explain all the indie love for him and Kendrick Lamar, who I really dislike as well. Give me Chief Keef or the Dream over that Love Jones bullshit any day. So yes you are correct. Channel Orange is terrible, but it does sound quite different than most of what is on the radio these days. It sounds like what was on the radio in 2001.
And also why didn't Breihan make this list?? Does Status Ain't Hood mean nothing these days?
Bizarre Ride 2 is better as well. And maybe even Low End Theory.
Besides Ilmattic, its the best hip hop album ever. That is just nuts. Its very clear that you know NOTHING about hip hop. MDTF is not even as goo a Graduation. Its Kanye's 4th best album simply put. It has bad songs on it. Monster aside from Nicki's verse is garbage. And the singles are very weak. Late Registration was an instant classic. And as far as all time hip hop albums go. These are all better than anything Kanye has done. Slick Rick- The Great Adventures Of slick rick Mobb Deep- The infamous Dr. Dre- The Chronic Erik B and Rakim- Paid In Full Ja-z- The Blueprint Wu Tang Clan- 36 Chambers Public Enemy- It Takes a Nation Ghostface Killah- Ironman NWA- Straight Outta Compton Redman- Whut The album Then Late Registration. and MDTB somewhere at like #50. Get a fucking grip.
I'm not sure where you're from... But hip hop nerds don't even really like My Dark Twisted Fantasy or Kendrick Lamar that much... I think you mean remembered by people who don't really listen to hip hop that much. MDTF wasn't even Kanye's second best album, maybe not even his third. The Carter 3, Fishscale, Take Care, Hell Hath No Fury, below the heavens, and Gas Mask were all much better.
I'm with you Michael. Hear to Hear is one of the best songs of the year, and the whole record will easily make my top ten of the year. I figured Stereogum would mostly ignore them, because, well its Stereogum,. But it is nice to see them getting some love on here! Hopefully we'll get a write up on Mediafired's album next!!!
I saw Hundred Waters at Brooklyn Bowl. And it was Booooring! The main problem with them is that they don't really have any songs. a lot of it sounds like some of the less melodic parts of Dirty Projector songs, repeated over and over, with electronic beats in the backround. We all left that show thinking, those guys are really good at the instruments, and those girls really can sing. And I don't remember one second of how any of the songs went. Mac Demarco opened for them though, and he was great. we were humming those songs all night.
I am with you 100%. Bon Iver is the worst. As is Frank Ocean, and the Antlers. An it only shows how limited Bon Iver fans taste are that, the Antlers and Frank Ocean are the artist that are brought up to defend him. If anything he should have brought up Prince, or the Brian Wilson. But this ASSHOLE name drops Frank Ocean and Wild Beasts? Give me a fucking break. Good Riddance is right. That self titled album was one of the worst records Ive heard in years. And this includes, that terrible Miranda Lambert album I listened to once. That new Kreashawn album that was unlistenable, that god awful POP Etc album that came out earlier this year, and that new John Mayer album my sister made me listen to over Labor Day that made me want to jump out the window. Bon Iver is simply one of the worst and most overrated artist EVER. Even Arcade Fire who also suck have a few good songs. This guy had maybe 2 on his first album. And absolutely none on the last one.
Fix It would have been my #1 by a long shot. Horn Of Plenty is their best record. I was wondering why no one else mentioned any songs off of it. But i imagine most of you guys haven't heard it. My list would go something more like this. 1) Fix it 2) Colorado 3) Shift 4) Alligator Friend Ep Version 5) A Good Place 6) Cheerleader 7) About Face 9) While You Wait For The Others 10) Merge
You guys are all nuts. This album is terrible. More boring than even Veckatimest. But at least that record had songs like Cheerleader and About Face. I don't like a single song on this record. To be fair I only really liked Horn Of Plenty. Yellow House and Veckatimest, were to boring and included to many bad Daniel Rossen songs. But on this one it seems Droste is just as terrible as Rossen usually is. Gimme Swans or Merchandise over this. This might even be worse than that Bon Iver Record from last year which I also hated as well. Hopefully Pitchfork will pan this record so we can be done with them. Sites like Tiny Mix Tapes will definitely hate this album, but I guess thats to be expected. Actually Half Gate is good though. So one good song on the entire record.
The stereogum list is absolutely bonkers. But so are most of all the commenters list. I am Trying To Break Your Heart shouldn't be anywhere near a top ten wilco song list. And How has only one person mentioned Wishful Thinking, which is easily their best one. The list should look something much closer to this one. 1) Wishful Thinking 2) Jesus ETC 3) Poor Places 4) Pot Kettle Black 5) Say You Miss Me 6) She's A Jar 7) Ashes Of American Flags 8) Impossible Germany 9) Muzzle Of Bees 10) Hotel Arizona
Along with the Merchandise album, this is tied as my AOTY so far. Ariel is better when he;s getting weird. For those of you who don't like Doldrums, you have no taste. This shit is one for the ages.
I can almost guarantee this will be the best album released this year. This shit is fucking ridiculous
This is great news. Aside from Honey Bunny, that last album was fucking terrible. hopefully he'll get back to writing good songs now.
Really... It seems to me you don't listen to enough music. All those songs are shit especially The Only Place and Im his Girl. The only ones that are any good at all are the Hot Chip and Spiritualized ones, but still don't belong anywhere near this list. The best songs of the summer are easily: 1) Recloose- Magic 2) Ariel Pink- Baby 3) Usher- Climax 4) Japandroids- Fires Highway 5) Meek Mill- Amen
I've seen Dave Matthews live many times. And they are actually all pretty shitty musicians. There the kind of guys whoever never wanna listen to music they just wanna JAM. And they guys always, always suck. As for their albums. Under The Table and Dreaming is probably the best, and its not good at all. Ants Marching, Lie In your Graves, What Would you Say, Satellite. all those songs truly suck. The only song thats even kind of decent is Best Of Whats Around, and that song is mediocre at best. And I dont hate them because of their audience, in fact most of my friends are frat dudes and sorority girls. I hate them because they fucking suck. And no they are not better than Death Grips (Zach Hill is the shit BTW), or Beyonce, or Bon Iver, Or Coldplay, or even the Counting Crows. They are quite simply and by a pretty large amount, aside from Nickelback, the worst band to ever be covered by this site. But you are right about one thing, the concerts do rule. I got my first blow job at a Dave concert when I was 16 years old, and I had my first threesome at a dave concert in Noblesville, IN. Great times, shitty backround music though. I would like to thank him for playing Two Step for 30 minutes every show though. A perfect time to start making out with the girl next to you. Also, The Men album is the best of the year so far, not Cloud Nothings, you assholes!
I guess that kind of makes sense. Rise above was loaded up with ridiculously catchy vocal melodies and girl group harmonies, And Bitte Orca was not. It had lots of instrumental classic rock flourishes where Rise above was mostly just melodies and noise. And I personally like noise music and girl groups way more than I like Led Zeppelin, so I guess that's why I like it better. I also think Maria Carey is the shit and that Bon Iver is awful. So yeah. Just different taste I guess.
Yeah I have disagree about Angel. She was by far the cutest one, and if it wasn't for her, and Amber of course, the Dirty Projectors wouldn't be anywhere near as popular as they are now. Also Rise Above is their best album and it will be hard to top that, but I think this will be better than Bitte Orca.
You both need to get out more. That Bass line has Larry Graham written all over it. And the drum beat sounds like it was ripped from an old Teddy Riley track.... And oh yeah. This song is the motherfucking shit!
Well, This is probably my third favorite Prince album behind Dirty Mind, and Controversy. Dirty Mind is by far my favorite as When You Were Mine is one of My favorite songs of all time period. With that said this record is the shit... Probably his last great album. My fav song from this one is I could Never Take the place Of Your Man. On a side note. I recently got the Vanity 6 self titled album, where Prince wrote all the songs, and it had some killer jams on it. Its like finding a long lost Prince album.
How on earth could you possibly know that?
This is her worst single to date. It sounds like one of the filler tracks from an old rilo Kiley album. This album is going to be terrible I think.
Well. Up All Night is the only Best Coast song I have ever cared about. So seeing that on there is very exciting. I remember Stereogum posting it a long time ago, and it was one of my favorite songs of 2010.
