Well... Aside from Radiohead, all those bands suck. And Bon Iver especially sounded terrible on SNL.
This record is a lot better than the Sleigh Bells record. Just Know Me on repeat is better than that record. But this record fucking rips. My fav album of the year so far. At least until The Men record comes out.
But.. My buddy who lives in Chicago and works for a hedge fund LOVES Bon Iver. As does everyone at his office I'm told.
I don't know man... I live in Brooklyn and I don't know anyone who likes Bon Iver.
they report on lots of artist/s who's albums they think suck. and its not just stereogum who thinks she sucks, i personally don't know anyone who doesnt think she blows.
Yeah i don't know man. It seemed like Stereogum jumped off the LDR train quite a while ago... I saw this review coming a mile away. just because they posted her songs doesn;t mean they liked them. i personally think all of the songs kind of suck including blue jeans and video games, so I love the review. And I don't think anyone is saying its pop so we must hate it. I think their saying it sucks so we hate it. This website was all about Adele all last year. They love Kanye too. I dont think they are anti pop music. I think they are anti shitty music. And to my ears, this album was pretty shitty... One of the worst albums Ive heard in a while, much worse then that Black Kids album that everyone seemed to hate so much a few years ago.
Why are you so mad Redjohn? Just go buy a couple of tickets to Bamboozle and chill out.
I think what those songs have that Frankie Rose and La Sera don't is a really hot chick singing them.
New York Times trashed it too bro. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/29/arts/music/born-to-die-lana-del-reys-debut-album.html?_r=1
You're nuts man. I can think of two songs right off the top of my head by chicks that are way better than Blue jeans and Video Games. La Sera's- Please Be My Third Eye and Frankie Rose's- Know Me. And thats just this month.. And those chicks Don't get anywhere near the press LDR does. It has very little to do with the songs... and a whole lot to do with a bunch of provocative press shots, a serious/sad sounding voice/ and a somewhat interesting video.
I like pop music. I like Gucci Gucci. I like Teenage Dream. I like that Rihanna song with the crazy video. And I absolutely hate this record. They are not good pop songs. They are terrible pop songs. No hooks anywhere to be found. And that National Anthem song is completely unlistenable!!
She has fat arms. Give me Amber Coffman or that Computer Magic chick or that chick on the cover of that Diplo mixtape... Now those chicks are hot! This chicks songs suck and her she's not that hot! She is wasting my time.
This song is outlandishly good! After that Arthur Russell cover on the last record I had a feeling she was on to something. Best song Ive heard all year.
She is not a lot better than whats on the Radio. Katy Perry, Drake, Rick Ross, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Dj Khaled, Kreashawn, and Lil Wayne are all a LOT better than her. Beyonce and Rihanna too. And this is all without me ever listening to the radio this year. I just know that those artist have songs that are better than hers that have been played on the radio this year. So im sure there are even more artist on the radio that are better than her that I don't even know about. She is awful. Her songs i mean. I actually like her in the pics where she wears those booty shorts quite a bit.
Yeah.... I completely disagree. Destroyers album was in my top 5 of the year. but I still think Gucci is a better song than Chinatown. In fact its my favorite rap song of the year. Now if they had put Demo For Kara Walker at 55 and Kreashawn at 48, I would have had a problem with that. Thats' probably the best song of the year.
Im with you. Tomboy is the shit. but I will say that I actually find it very amusing when the other Cold Cave dude dances around and pumps his fist.
You know. i liked Album quite a bit. And i love that new song they have Lawrence. But i honestly could not find anything I liked about any of the songs on that album. I mean Honey Bunny was the best one i thought and even that one wasn't anywhere near one of my favorite tracks of the year. As well as Bon Iver goes. I didn't really care for the first one all that much. Some of the songs reminded me of Everlast. But this one was 10X worse. the only song i liked was Beth/Rest. Which some people seemed to hate. I thought it was a motherfucking Jam! One of my favs of the year. And yeah Stereogums list was out there this year. First time since I've been reading it that I disagreed with almost everything on the list.... And on a side note....The Drake record is really really good. Just not Top 5 good. Top 30 maybe.
Well I disagree with nearly everything on this list. But it makes me happy that you didn't have like Panda Bear at #4 and then Girls and Bon Iver at the top. Because then I would have been confused, because Tomboy is my favorite of the year by a long shot and I thought the Girls and Bon Iver albums were absolutely awful. at least this way I know that we clearly hear two very different things in music. It seems like you guys aren't very big on melody. Anyways here is my list. 1) Panda Bear- Tomboy 2) Juliana Barwick- The Magic Place 3) Destroyer- Kaputt 4) Yuck- 5) Fucked Up- David Comes To Life 6) Grouper- 7) Gang Gang Dance- 8) Ducktails- Arcade Dynamics III 9) Kurt Vile- Smoke Ring For My Halo 10) Elanor Friedberger- Last Summer 11) Woods- Sun And Shade 12) Braids- Native Speaker 13) The Field- Looping State Of Mind 14) Bill Callahan- Apocalypse 15) Cass Mccombs- Humor Risk 16) John Maus- We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves 17) M83- Hurry Up, Were Dreaming 18) J Mascis- Several Shades Of Why 19) G-Side- The One...Cohesive 20) Hammers Of Misfortune- 17th st. 21) Shabazz Palaces- Black Up 22) Stephen Malkmus- Mirror Traffic 23) Cass Mccombs- Wits End 24) Wolves In The Throne Room- Celestial Lineage 25) Toro Y Moi- Freaking Out
You're nuts dude. You can talk about god all you want if you have fuckin jams. and you can dress like a cowboy badass all you want to. Matthew Houck does that shit. And hipsters fucking love him. The bottom line is that Josh dude doesn't have any jams. NONE. And I listened to the whole album. Not one jam on the whole thing. That's why people don't like it.
The songs suck bro. Thats what is pissing everyone off so much. If these songs sounded like say...1,2,3,4 or Lived in Bars. People would probably still make fun of her lips, but there would be no question as to whether the songs were great, because those songs are undeniably great. You either have bad taste or are really horny, and her lips and tits have clogged your ears.
Callahan.....Maybe. But i definitely would not throw Bradford Cox in this mix. All the best Deerhunter songs are Lockett Pundt songs. Will Oldahm is much better too.
Yeah.... I would consider Julianna Barwick a songwriter... i would also say that Kevin Barnes is probably a better songwriter than Cass Mccombs. As well as Anthony Gonzalez. Avey Tare is probably better too. i think Cass is great, and Humor Risk is probably one of my favorite records of the year.. But there are a lot of songwriters around that are probably a little better than him. Dave Longstreth is better too.
Noah Lennox, Ariel Pink, Ed Droste, Jesy Fortino, Julianna Barwick, and Kurt Vile just to name a few.
Well there are actually lots of Walmart country songs that are even better than that one. Tim Mcgraws Dont Take The Girl, Deana Carters- Strawberry Wine, and Randy Travis' Forever and Ever Amen are just a few great ones. What irks me about this post is that Miranda Lambert doesn't have any songs that hold a candle to those. Which makes me wonder.."Why her." I actually went on the Billboard country Charts and listened to most of the 30 songs on the top country chart list, and I would say that Miranda's song was about the the 16th or 17th best one. None of them were very good. Except that George Strait song. That one was decent. So I wonder why none of those songs have gotten any play here. If stereogum wants to start pushing Pop Country, thats fine with me. But just to single her out as like the Kanye West of Pop country is silly, because her songs aren't even close to the best ones being released today. I think its because she comes across as a girl who might be a little more interested in music than say Carrie Underwood, who seems like she probably has owned about 5 records total her entire life... Miranda Lambert seems like she maybe might have heard of Stereogum or Pitchfork before. Thats the only reason I can see that so many indie blogs like to show her love.... Because as far as her songs go. They suck. Their actually worse than most Pop Country songs. Which is pretty bad. Oh yeah...and Brooks and Dunn have some jams too!
She speaks and looks like a character from the Sopranos. Or Steve Martins girlfriend in Little Shop Of Horrors. I'm not really sure yet.
You're surprised that A Morning Benders song didn't make it onto a list of the "Greatest" Indie rock songs of all time? Weird. I guess it wouldn't be fun to load the list up with lots of songs by one band.. But Guided By Voices- A Good Flying Bird is a monster of song. Also: Animal Collective- Sweet Road Arthur Russell- You Can Make Me Feel Bad Vivian Girls- No Orange Juice- Intuition Told Me Part 1
you guys are nuts. Heartbreaker was rad. Gold mostly sucked. rock N roll was unlistenable. The three in 2005 were pretty good, especially jacksonville city nights.. Love and Hell was very spotty and Easy tiger was Garbage. With that said, this album is okay. But Adams isn't anywhere near the level of the best musicians in indiedom anymore. He'll never get back to those whiskeytown-heartbreaker days again. But even those records had some duds. He never really was able to make a true classic record. So yeah. He stopped making good music quite a while a go. Return to form. Sure. But still. pretty mediocre in the grand scheme of things.
Well.. the fleet foxes record wont get any rotation from me. I think it sucks.... So comparing the two seems kind of silly. I would imagine that most people who will be playing Tomboy a lot have very little interest in Fleet Foxes. A better comparison would be Tomboy and the new Grouper album, or Fleet Foxes and a new Kings Of Leon album.
Do you think that the Fleet Foxes record is better than this?
Not sure why Candy Claws hasn't gotten any burn? That record is incredible! Same with Mountain Man! I thought that Arcade Fire album was trash! Sleigh Bells too! BTW that Kanye album is pretty amazing. But my top two are Ariel Pink and Caribou. And then Alcest which I imagine will be on the Metal list. Then Kanye probably.
yeah, can't really cosign to many of those or a lot on the list. Mine would be.... Ariel Pink- Before Today Caribou-Swim James Blake- CMYK Alcest- Acaiiles De Lune Kanye West- My Dark Twisted Fantasy Women- Public Strain The Radio Dept- Clinging To A Scheme Highlife-Best Bless Candy Claws- Hidden Lands Mountain Man- Mountain Man
I couldn't agree more. I have strongly disliked this band from the first second I heard them! I also saw them live a while ago opening up for Clap Your hands Say Yeah, at a Lollapalooza after party. They were awful! And all their fans 100% loved Jack Johnson. I know this because........ Every single one of them we talked to went to see Ben Harper instead of Daft Punk!
Um...Yeah... Coronado, Desire Lines and Helicopter are great. The rest are just okay. Before Today is fantastic from start to finish! Not a bad song on that thing. Round and Round is a Monster of a pop song. Have One On Me is a killer record too! As is Everything In Between. And you didn't like Caribou's new album??? What? I actually am starting to like Down There better than Halycon Digest too! Microcastle and Cryptograms rocked though!!!!
Oliver Twist is really hard too!
I wouldn't think so. 3 umbrellas is the only real banger on the album...But they did give Deerhunter a 9.2 and theres a whole bunch of bullshit on that record and only two or three real killer tracks. So yeah tough call. If I had to bet money on it, I guess I would say yes. Barely.. Low eights. This should end the Panda vs Avey debate though. There really is no comparison.
Well i loved Slow Motion, but yeah these snippets are pretty insane... I have a feeling every single is going to be better than the next. A very good day indeed. Though it does trouble me that so many more SG readers are more interested in Kings Of Leon than this. Weird. Who are these people and what types of food do they eat?
I agree about the vocals. They are very cheesy. Sometimes it works though. Liturgy is fantastic! The best albums of the year so far are the Alcest, Ariel Pink, and Caribou albums. With the Women and Deerhunter albums not too far behind.
Well I can't cosign MGMT though Someones Missing is very much a JAM. I would say that The Panda Bear would probably beat the Kanye Bear in a fight. The Kanye Bear seems to rely on his Delorean DMC-12 too much and maybe is to obsessed with image, hence him dressing up in human clothing. The Panda Bear would just use brute strength and dolphin squeals to ultimately bring home the victory.
