Yeah, I find the situation extremely funny and am admittedly lukewarm at best on Drake. But dude handled it really well - stayed positive even when getting booed, and it's kind of a bummer that they treated a surprise guest like that just because they wanted someone else. I mean if the surprise guest was Kid Rock, boo away. But I don't really think Drake deserved that.

i do agree that a mass exodus of people from the stage would've been better because it would've been funnier "And now, your surprise headliner, straight from Toronto, DRAK--hey, where's everyone going?"

Think 8 is about when I first saw the original trilogy, since it was right as Attack of the Clones came out. If they're as into it as I was, I'd recommend stocking up on Star Wars Halloween costumes during the offseason.

This is really fucking good. I still miss Sporting Life and Hak, though. So It Goes is most certainly on my albums of the decade list.

Accidental downvote on my part. I don't disagree that Doom, Kool Keith, Anti-Pop, Afrika Bambaata, Das Racist, the Neptunes, some folks on Rhymesayers, and a million others all were weird in their own ways. Maybe I should rephrase in that OF represented an entirely new form of weirdness and pushed a whole slew of stuff that had never, ever been brought to rap to the mainstream.

But I think a case for Odd Future could be made, who beget a whole circle of artists (aside from Tyler, Earl, the Internet, Frank, the artists who then came up in the circles that those artists created like Vince Staples). And more importantly they're really the ones who broke the mold and made it okay to be weird in hip-hop. They paved the way for LGBTQ acceptance in hip-hop. They integrated other styles in a way that the genre desperately needed and still resonates (you can see it in everyone from Tentacion to Mac Miller to King Krule to Billie Eilish). For as much as I love Kendrick, he does relate a little more closely to older/more traditional styles of rap and I'd argue that OF's integration of punk, hip-hop, R&B, jazz, etc. could arguably make them more influential in the long run.

Decades are an arbitrary method of marking time, naming one artist is ridiculous, comparing artists in terms of greatness doesn't make sense without the perspective of time. With all that said, Kendrick is unquestionably the artist of the decade.

agreed, but i think that's also partially due to the fact that drake's still at an earlier stage in his career than those guys. ye and hov and em were hitting #1 with songs like empire state of mind, love the way you lie, etc i feel like jay/em/ye hitting #1s with albums and not with singles really only starts once you get about 15-20 years in (and drake's only like 10-11 in). that's when you're old enough that you really start to rely on your legacy fanbase for the album support and stop releasing high-charting singles

100% agree. if I'm gonna go with the ultimate rap villains that I still root for, my pick would be on Future or Pusha. hearing that gleefully twisted outro at the end of adidon is like watching a bravura performance of the joker (pick your favorite version)

I'm now envisioning a scenario where the weird "estate of" fact you mention, hologram performances of dead musicians, and a vault of unreleased music create an unholy trinity in which dead artists are functionally alive. I don't like it.

I *definitely* have a fond memory of having my parents drive me to go Christmas shopping at a time when I wasn't allowed CDs with Parental Advisory stickers. I bought The Black Parade for too much money at Barnes and Noble and, under the guise of "don't look in my bag cause then you'll see what I got you!", snuck it back into my bedroom where I listened to it on headphones almost every day for a solid year.

Don't disagree, some lines on Yeezus are cringeworthy. But so are a lot of lyrics on a lot of punk songs. The Lou Reed review of Yeezus sums up my feelings on the lyrics accurately. And there are also incredible lyrical bits, too. Which fits the whole sonic blueprint of extreme ugliness clashing up against bits of sublime beauty. Yeezus is a personal top-10 album for me of the decade (and is certainly very high on my all-time list) for a million reasons, but that juxtaposition is probably the most important one.
