if you needed any other indicator of how much of a bummer 2020 is, the guy from tim and eric singing "i don't see the value in having fun" should suffice

I think you could make just as much of a case for the opposite - a sales environment wherein more people are staying inside and have nothing else to do other than stream a surprise release probably helped her. Plus the dearth of "big" album releases this year so far meant she didn't have much competition, as compared to Lover coming out in August 2019 and trying to stand out in a month that also saw releases from Drake, Lana Del Rey, Young Thug, Bon Iver, Brockhampton, etc.

So on one hand, you have Bandcamp realizing the tough spot musicians are in these days - COVID or no COVID - and having multiple days in which they give up all their profits to support the actual creators. On the other, ya got Swedish Dr. Evil over here calling on musicians to keep cranking out the product and blaming them for not getting with the times, while he sits on nearly $5 billion and gives one of the lowest per-stream payouts in the entire industry. I hope he falls into a volcano.

I definitely wrote these guys off after their second album or so but after listening to this (lovely) cover I went back to their most recent album which I surprisingly found to be really good! At least, it feels like their best project, since I always kinda thought there were a couple good tunes on their earlier albums, but a lotta same-y filler

The only example that's coming to mind right now is El-P on Cancer 4 Cure and Killer Mike's RAP Music in 2012, but if you count the Alchemist/Conway Lulu EP, I still think Alchemist has the better year (and we're barely halfway done, so who knows if he has some other project in the works)

if she's a policy prof/researcher AND a dog rescuer she pretty much jumps to the front of the line of my favorite people as well! (also, would love to check out her research if you have a link!) def agree it's not an infinite resource you can tap into, esp. when it comes to the real, active, nitty-gritty labor type of stuff. you've gotta take care of yourself and not put whatever "care" you might have for others first (to say nothing of martyrdom complexes and how those can be hella harmful, etc etc) BUT i do like to think of it as a muscle, in that if you try to practice empathy consistently, and in unexpected ways that "shock" your emotional system, you'll find yourself capable of relating to and caring for people that seemed previously completely incomprehensible. at least i hope that's the case. (i should provide the disclaimer that i fail pretty much every hour at implementing this shit in my personal life, and am much better at telling people what to do on the internet.)

Super well said. I say this as a massive fan of nearly every bit of his music (at least, through Jesus Is King): Kanye (and particularly this interview with him) is a perfect example of so many horrible aspects of our culture: the ignorance with which we treat mental illness, the adoration/damnation attitude towards celebrity, the lack of substance surrounding political discourse, the undue influence a public figure can have.... When I think about the kid who made College Dropout grinning and rapping for Pharrell in the studio, and how he turned into this ... it makes me so, so horribly sad.

thank you for being the sole voice of reason here. also, yeah, Stereogum, don’t cover this clickbait-y shit. all it does is give attention-seeking idiots the platform to spew nonsense and provoke hysterical reactions. i enjoy this site precisely because it’s been an alternative to the other 99.9999% of media, which does precisely that.
