Oh snap: "Menomena is a band with no primary songwriter" - Wikipedia
I don't know man... this song is pretty top-notch in my books. I can't claim to know the extent of Brent's influence on Menomena because I haven't been listening to them thaaaaat long, but just from interviews and features I've read I kinda gleaned that Justin and Danny were responsible for the vast majority of the songwriting, both musically and lyrically, which I always felt was Menomena's trump card. The way they manage to seamlessly incorporate so many unique musical motifs into some of their songs is what really sets them apart. Having said that, this song is very straightforward for Menomena (like Michael Nelson said in the preamble), and maybe that IS due to Brent's departure. I damn-well hope not.
Wow, pleasantly surprised by her ability to do Stevie Nicks's voice some justice.
How good was "The Socialites" at that show? Not even one of my favourite tracks on SLM, but it was real good live. My first time at the Danforth was one to remember!
Boy-oh-buoy Nardwuar is da man. He's got some seriously good interviews with OFWGKTA, Danny Brown, Kendrick Lamar, and Pharell, among others.
Unto Caesar is probably my favourite track off it so far, thanks in no small part to that line.
I would DEFINITELY be friends with my avatar. Bro's got sick flow.
and here's a plug for your blog: y'all should read Mikey's blog at awkwardsound.com, it's pretty good.
Atta boy Michael_! We all knew the reasonable you was still around. You're a great writer ("you only get what others agree not to withhold from you" - nicely poetic line, bro), which forces me to hope that things work out for you and your blog/writing in general. Sounds like you're in a shitty place right now due to some seriously bad luck and lack of options. You're a complete stranger to me, but I empathize and hope your life improves soon.
Thanks Mikey! You da man!
I'm another bummed Canadian
I went through the same process with Attack on Memory. HOW IRONIC
you're a bit of a drama queen eh?
I don't know... I kinda feel like Fear Fun is a little too straightforward folk/rock for pitchfork to be impressed enough to give it a BNM denomination. I predict an unspectacular 7.6
I'm going with Michael_ on this one. The vocals sounds too similar to those of Victoria Legrand, which in itself is actually a good thing. However, the musical accompaniment also sounds like Beach House, especially the watery, detuned synths on the opening to "Propagation". Admittedly, I haven't listened to very much of Nootropics, but it almost just seems like a teaser for Bloom or something... My money is on Fear Fun for this week.
Is it "Heavy Fwends" or "Heady Fwends"? I'm not trying to be a petty asshole - I've seen both names used in various places. I legitimately want to know what the album is called.
I'm not really a fan of John Mayer, but the guy can definitely shred.
Well, your obsessive ranting about the "In Defense of Skrillex" article definitely caught my attention. I just wanted to say I checked out your site, Awkward Sound, and thought it was really well laid out, designed, and (most importantly) written. I will certainly be taking a look at your best of lists and recommended albums and songs as soon as I get the chance. If you keep writing, I promise to keep reading.
I read that line about 50 times trying to make sense of it... then I realized it was just a typo.
James Mercer's beard makes me feel old
I want to punch the sarcasm out of every one of your comments. ...I guess I'm just perplexed as to why you'd come on here just to call Bradford Cox a "douche dicking around with tape loops", and then refer to his proponents as "fucking whiney ass ‘fanboys’". I'm all for free speech and differing opinions, but Jesus, Mary, and Joseph! you just make yourself sound so dumb and piss so many people off while exercising those rights.
I'm super pumped that you two guys, such well-respected Stereogum readers, are from/have lived in Southern Ontario, enjoy Steamwhistle but question its overpricedness, watch The Wire, and look at Ryan Braun dick pics! I do those things too!
