Although MIA still doesn't come out looking good in my eyes (especially considering the whole cell phone snafu), this does make it seem to me that Lyn Hirschberg at the very least embellished this story to make MIA look worse. (And, in fact, she undoubtedly misquoted her in one instance.) Now I'm just curious as to what a truffle fry tastes like. I'd never heard of them until this article, but I have a hard time imagining that they could possibly taste good.
I'm liking it. Definitely a return to form after 808s, and yeah, a lot of his lines are dumb, but that's just part of the deal when you're talking about Kanye.
I believe the apostrophe was added by an admin on this site after the initial post. I'm almost certain I copied and pasted the quote in my comment directly from the initial post (which, as you'll notice, does not contain that fun little apostrophe). Certainly wouldn't be the first time a Stereogum post has been edited after it was initially posted. In any case, I wasn't trying to be a "pretentious dick," simply point out that Ben Gibbard has covered The Magnetic Fields before. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe I said, "Actually, he covered 'Why I Cry' back in 1997 on an All-Time Quarterback EP, ASSHOLE." For the record: amrit, I do not think you're an asshole.
"For the first time, Ben Gibbard covers the Magnetic Fields." Actually, he covered "Why I Cry" back in 1997 on an All-Time Quarterback EP.
I'll just come right out and say it: I really can't stand MGMT. Their only good songs are "Electric Feel" and "Kids." "Time to Pretend" is fucking obnoxious, and the keyboard from the intro rips off the keyboard from the intro of Styrofoam's Just Like the 80s Never Happened Mix of "The Postman" by American Analog Set. The rest of their album sounds like they're trying too hard to be a 70s British glam act. The vocals on "The Youth," in particular, sound like he's trying way too hard to be Bowie. In summation: Fuck MGMT. I agree with Capers.
I almost couldn't believe that was her voice at first. It's gotten so much smoother and less screachy since "The Milk-Eyed Mender" (for better and for worse, IMHO).
Well done. When I saw "Grizzly Bear Cover Hot Chip," I'll admit my initial thought was, "This cannot be good." But then I heard which song it was and heard the execution of said cover and was very pleasantly surprised.
Kevin has promised this album will actually be MORE funky than the last two. Even if the final version of this song does end up sounding like this preview version, I suspect the rest of the album won't--remember "Touched Something's Hollow" off of "Skeletal Lamping"? He's also released "Feminine Effects" in recent years, which is another acoustic piano ballad. Regardless, I totally trust Kevin's judgment, whether or not Jon Brion produces the album (Kevin has stated that he is currently working with Brion, but if he doesn't like how these sessions end up sounding, he may just scrap them and produce the album himself like he's always done).
Nope, but I'll one-up the zip file, and give you a hint: g2p.org, then tweak around the keywords they enter into Google. I generally find Mediafire to be best digital storage space site, in terms of both selection and download time.
Taylor Swift made the list, PERIOD?!?! Say WTF?!! Sorry Pitchfork, but it's literally not possible to make her music acceptable to anyone with decent taste.
Glad to see a lot of love for Annie and Angel. Though I was rooting for Annie to be #1 (she got my vote), partially because of her underdog status, but mostly because she's the better artist overall. I met her once, and she was delightful and very humble. (Plus, I'm in love with her guitar.) GUMMY AWARDS '10: Can anyone topple the two-time champ and heavy favorite, Zooey Deschanel?
I'm also disappointed that "Oracular Spectacular" made the list. But overall it's pretty good. I'm glad "Hissing Fauna" got some props.
I wish "The Photo Album" were on this list instead of "Transatlanticism." Ben Gibbard peaked lyrically, and the band peaked musically, on "We Have The Facts ..." and that album.
"Wolfgang" is a fun album, but certainly not top 5 material. Especially considering "Bromst" was also released this year, and "Actor" also.
"Maybe P4K shouldn't have thrown down the gauntlet by asking if Bitte Orca was the best album of the year." Wrong site -- it was Stereogum that posted that piece. And, having thought long and hard about it, I think, yes, "Bitte Orca" is the album if the year. Followed by "Bromst" and "Merriweather Post Pavilion."
I'm not sure, maybe you should ask Miley Cyrus about that demographic? I'm not too surprised. I mean, Radiohead is the one really good band that many mainstream music outlets seem to gush about (Rolling Stone, Spin, MTV, etc.), they're probably the one "weird/experimental" band that many of the voters in that poll listen to.
Singles artist? Really? Some of his least-good songs are his singles, and many of his best tracks are not, so I don't have a clue what you're talking about.
Yeah, seriously. Guy's put out four amazing albums in a row and has an album coming out this spring, yet I hear nothing about it here, nevermind it being included on this list. And I'm sorry, but I am really not excited about new MGMT and Interpol albums. Maybe they'll completely surprise me, but otherwise we can expect a few really good singles and a bunch of lame 70s British progressive rock cliches from MGMT, and more of the same from Interpol.
Great job of remixing an already-dense, heavily cut-up song!
Simple solution: Download that s#!t from digital storage space. You get the great music without supporting the franchise. In this instance, just as with Jay-Z's "Blueprint 3" on LiveNation's label, I consider copyright infringement to be the principled course of action.
I'm really looking forward to hearing the YACHT remix of "Armistice." I've been loving "See Mystery Lights" lately, and "Wolfgang" was the album of the summer for me.
Good artist remixing good artist -- and the remix is a good one at that. What's NOT ok about that?
Oh hell, I'll jump on the wagon. Mostly cause I like lists. Best Five: 1. Happiness is a Warm Gun 2. I'm Only Sleeping 3.Cry Baby Cry 4.Dear Prudence 5.Michelle Worst: 1. While My Guitar Gently Weeps (I'm honestly not doing this to be contrarian. I detest that hideous octave on the piano in the beginning to no end, and Clapton's playing is boring. 2. Glass Onion 3. Come Together 4. I Want To Tell You 5. Run For Your Life As you may have guessed, I'm rather partial to The White Album. It's definitely rather spotty, but I think it has some of their greatest songs on it. I didn't have space to include "Julia" or "I'm So Tired," but those would certainly be included in a longer list.
Maybe you forgot to add extra cute points for being in a band? I strongly support musicianship-based affirmative action. I honestly think that's the only reason why I actually find Karen O to be attractive.
I agree. Lucky guy. I want to be in an awesome band surrounded by cute girls!
I play guitar, and I say that shit's fuckin' hard, especially while singing as well.
I was thinking more in terms of albums. I kind of enjoy the song "Pork and Beans." But yeah, that was quite an oversight on my part.
I mean, there are social situations in which people might play Weezer's albums, and I'm not gonna be like "Turn that off right now." So I guess maybe that makes me a bitch?
Phil Selway is such an amazing drummer. This is up there with "Reckoner" for my favorite works of his. Is that computer keyboard clicking as percussion I detect in the beginning, or just some funky drum sounds?
Agreed. I love Radiohead as well and totally disagree with Holly, but there's no reason to devolve into such disrespectful, sexist name-calling. Plus, what makes a promiscuous woman have inherently bad taste in music?
I'd even go so far as to say, "MUCH less bad." Still will not listen to their new album though. I will not voluntarily listen to anything post-"Maladroit."
What a great (and well-deserved) burn! Two thumbs up to Carrie Brownstein for that one.
li-li-lick it like a lollipop.
True, he cuts the original to shreds, recognizable only by the short vocal clips, but he does a great job of fitting those clips into a damn good dance track. I should check out more stuff by this guy, cause his remix of Britney Spears' "Circus" is sick as well. For another example of a track getting completely torn apart and something completely engrossing made out of the remnants, check out the Mad Decent remix of "Id Engager" by of Montreal. I love both the original song and the remix for what they are, on their own terms ? not by my preconceived notions of what they should or shouldn't be.
Better than the last single, at least.
I don't like the vocals. Also not really liking the lead guitar. Overall, I would not be disappointed if this song had never existed, because I don't see a need for it to.
I must say I'm really not a fan of this remix. I really don't like the slowed-down vocals, and I wish they had used more parts of the song than just repeating the chorus almost the entire time.
"But as far as music goes, you can do a lot worse than the BEP." Maybe that's true for some of the other stuff they've done, but it would be damn near impossible to do worse than this particular song.
I agree, but I find his ignorance, hypocrisy and general outrageousness entertaining. In the way I find trashy TV shows like "The OC" entertaining. I can't even honestly say I think his heart's in the right place. Maybe he'll say some things that make me think that, like "George Bush doesn't care about black people" or calling out his former homophobia as well as his peers', but then he comes out with crap like "O.J. Simpson, amazing. Chris Brown, amazing" and is generally extremely disrespectful to women (except his mama ? but with crap like this, he doesn't even seem to be respecting her legacy as a college English teacher and his pledge to go back to school to make her proud of him).
I bet a lot of people got those ideas about this "Jesus" guy by reading a book ...
