Something about the way she just typed "yes" rings out as false. It would feel more real if she responded with something like "y", "yep" or "yea" or better yet a winking emoji. That's how people actually "talk" online. Like the difference between "?" and "...?" in a text is tangible. It's just weird that we're at a point where a single word or emoji can be interpreted multiple ways these days. Language is dying.

Dumpster diving masquerading as some kind of artistic statement. So unnecessary. But isn't this a police or county services home investigation photo? Who gets the $85k?

I know he's persona non grata round these parts but the extended 9+ minute Moz version is beautifully lush and atmospheric. One of his best solo covers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyUyr49V8Ww

You should know by now that any comment that isn't absolute fawning praise when it comes to Queen CRJ is basically a diss.

This post could have had a point if they even slightly questioned why K.dot would bring someone white up to rap a song the lyrics of which he knows well will create an awkward situation. It's hard not to see this as a bit of an entrapment setup.

You'd be surprised but a large amount of taping attendees are real fans of the bands. Tix sell out in advance on 1iota.com. Caught Alabama Shakes there and it was a fun mini concert, they played for 30 minutes after the taping.

May 18, 2018 on Watch MGMT Play 5 Little Dark Age Songs Outside At Jimmy Kimmel
I remember an interesting breakdown back at the time - can't remember where I saw it - that Serial season one the whole story was pure fiction, complete with actors, phony police records, phony online chatter steering the discussion, mixed in with real ordinary people trying to solve it. Someone tried to conduct their own search of public records on the details of the case, hit a lot of dead ends, pointed out a lot of the genealogy of the names don't add up. Only speculation as to the overarching intention though. Perhaps some kind of real time social/media exercise. If you remember how the episodes were being released (eg, serialized) incorporating online chatter in real time, it was fairly unique. Focused around Twitter, Reddit, etc. Now this HBO thing would seem about to stir it all up again. Weird.

Nice little lineup. Always looking for a good excuse to get up to the Bay. This one may come down to the pricing whether or not it draws. I'd say $125-150 for the weekend feels about right. Unrelated: this place seems to have missed the great updates to the Desert Daze lineup which is turning into probably the best mid size Fall festival. And taking place in sleepy Moreno Valley, CA, which is weird and amusing, if you know that area, the I.E. (Inland Empire).

May 14, 2018 on Rita Ora Apologizes For “Girls”
Love the clip. Really warming up to the record. You'd think it was their Metal Machine Music or something, the way some have panned it. The immediate dismissal by many for "no hooks" or "bad lyrics" may eventually looked back on as they just didn't get what they were trying to do. Though I bet a good many do come around to it eventually. Maybe similar to King of Limbs? Not sure about a good comp for this.

May 13, 2018 on Arctic Monkeys – “Four Out Of Five” Video
It's obvious this was going to be a disappointment to many, that it wasn't More of the Same. You got to hand it to them to make this sharp left turn at this point in their career. Pure departure and gamble. Took some balls. It is a rich production and subtlety arranged. I suspect this record will reveal itself on repeat listens in different listening situations and environments. You can quote almost any band's lyrics out of context and find some real clunkers. (That Strokes line was knowingly put right up front as bait.) Also, it does not really sound like Lambchop, Everything Now, prog or 70's french pop.

Good instincts to be worried when Hyden is in your corner. I tuned out of his lousy review when he referred to them as the British Strokes. There's a lot to unpack in this record and he doesn't get past the surface, as usual.

You're onto something here. LA hasn't had a true grassroots national breakout rock band in a while and may not again. Maybe Bleached is the last one? But I'm not sure even they are real "breakouts" on a national headlining level.

Good for Tiny Engines to jump on them. I think they just played their first shows this past SXSW? It's always good to get something fresh outside the usual Beggars/4AD/Matador/Grandstand axis of indie power.

Upvoted for your heroic efforts to restate my points in the worst imaginable terms. Are you a lawyer? I mean, I get it, it's a broader nuanced point I'm trying to make and probably not doing it well. Carry on.

Dig these kids. A bit weird how much national buzz they are getting while barely making a dent in the local LA scene. A Rolling Stone mention, 1000 words in Stereogum, Billions booking. I want to think it's all just about the catchy music but suspect somebody's connected. Or maybe the indelible band name helped with giving them a certain media stickiness. Either way, good for them.

Fair enough. This isn't really the hill I want to die on. I just have a lot of fond memories of the FYF scene as an Angeleno so this story bugged me. It sucks to see FYF go down in flames. Carlson did a lot of good for a lot of people for a lot of years on the scene here. And then he fucked up, couldn't keep his dick in check. And these days, you fuck up, you get erased.

Like I said, I'm not a fan of him, not defending him. More about defending being tried like an individual and maintaining a sense of proportion, which is steadily eroding. If there's a crime committed, ring him up, make him do the time. People are being put in this limbo where they aren't charged with anything, but yet they can't live a life either. It's Kafkaesque. Nothing troubles you about that? People fuck up. I know I have. Those acts described in the story were shitty, but they probably don't rise above the typical antics of R rated 80's teen sex comedy. (By nonviolent, I meant no physical injury. I don't diminish any emotional toll on those gals, that is valid. )

May 7, 2018 on FYF Fest Cancelled Due To Poor Ticket Sales
Quality over quantity. The point was that no one was complaining about the numbers of female artists last year, representation was felt as those great names cast a large shadow over the whole weekend. That 2017 line up sold out 3 days, this year's lineup couldn't even sell enough to even keep it alive, so the people responded accordingly.

So you think Carlson is beyond redemption? You're welcome to that take but are you familiar with the story?: https://www.spin.com/featured/fyf-fest-sean-carlson-sexual-harassment-assault-allegations/ I don't even really like the guy, I've had run ins with him. It's just chilling that you can just be ended like this for a handful of nonviolent noncriminal fuckups.

May 7, 2018 on FYF Fest Cancelled Due To Poor Ticket Sales
Can't say I didn't see this coming. Weak lineup, increased per day pricing, poor marketing, bad communication with their fanbase. They went all in on this female heavy theme and miscalculated the appeal of the names they booked. The irony is that the ousted Sean Carlson put on an incredible female heavy bill in his final edition in 2017 - Bjork, Missy Elliott (in the same night), Solange, Erykah Badu, Mitski, Angel Olsen, etc. Won't be topped anytime soon. Let him pay his penance, rehabilitate and get a second chance, the dude is barely 30. He doesn't deserved to be ended professionally forever.
