This is a 10 for all 10s. Thirty years later, I still can't get enough of this song.
I had moved on from INXS by this point - couldn't tell you anything about any song of theirs since "Suicide Blonde" besides "Beautiful Girl". When I get a chance today I'll listen to these... (I'm pretending to take attendance in front of class as I read today's entry - I think playing the music could be a giveaway.)
2-2-4-10 I mentioned before that I own Patti LaBelle's version of IYAMt, and for that reason I can not go higher than a 2. (I was thinking of writing this synopsis Suess-style, but I'll leave it up to Vails to pull off poetry) ABH reminds me of the country sh** my family listened to, and I never liked any of it. I'm sure there's a plethora of therapists that would want to dive into that topic. Secada's song is...nice. Not my cup of tea. "Higher Ground" though? 10.
Madonna’s “This Used to be My Playground” top YouTube official music video comments: 1. Now i'm depressed 2. She needs to do this and I’ll Remember, two amazing ballads from soundtracks she’s never performed live. 3. Used to love this song as a kid, and still do, but now every time I see the video I think how it ripped off the music video for Boy George's To Be Reborn so much. And I laugh 'cause he called this "This Used To Be My Music Video." :P (I’m not sure what this person had, but I want some): 4. ..we followed the creek down and beneath the bleachers did we have ANY care about Abner Doubleday or Baseball! yeah you might be FaMaLee Madonna! Sophia..Creighton..Lindsay..etc! aka..Fox! Rock's Czar! New York Strip Steak PMc! Immigrated But Not On The Titanic! Ellis Island! 2017 News! A Coal Fire Destroyed The Quality of a construction..a bulkhead! the coup de gras! 5. Was Robbie Williams referencing a line in this song with No Regrets? Sung with a very similar melody too.
From the Morning After: 1. I did not know who Celine Dion was in 1992...sadly, I would eventually. I did know the song, however, as I owned the Patti LaBelle version, off the same album that brought me "Yo Mister". It wouldn't be the only songs I bought off her, however, as I mentioned last post (I think) - "Feels Like Another One" from 1991 was a cassingle in my collection, and I would get another of her releases in 1994, even as I entered The Grunge Zone. 2. I said last week that Lionel Richie was the most successful artist I'd never purchased...but I just looked over Dion's run, and she certainly gave chase. I'm not sure what the final numbers are, but I didn't buy anything of hers as well. 3. I don't have a recreated list from the summer of 1992, as I was bouncing between Scandinavia, Russia, Greece, and everywhere in between. I didn't even have music with me; and it made all the difference in the world. I wound up talking to random people on trains - a group of Polish boy/girl scouts on the way to Prague, an American who was reading "Foucault's Pendulum" between Vienna and Venice, and I borrowed for a few hours during which time I decided it was my favorite book ever, and a professor from the University of Nuremberg of ancient (Roman) history. I was a 23 yr old history teacher, and man did I have questions...
I saw STP on the Family Values Tour with Static X, Linkin Park et al in...2001? 2002? I went with my alcoholic girlfriend with whom I was set up with by my stepmother. At the time, I didn't KNOW she was, but after I recognized the signs I confronted my stepmother. Her response? "Well, I thought you two would have something in common." Pearl Jam's albums declined in quality RAPIDLY: Ten was great, Vs good/great, Vitalogy HORRIBLE and I lost track of them afterwards, only occasionally hearing the odd single or so from them after. STP's Core is equal to Ten...or if Ten was a "10", Core would be a "9.8" - it's that close...and Purple is better. Tiny Music probably clocks in around a 6, and their next two albums are listenable. So...5 albums for STP, 2 for PJ.
I have ALWAYS been of the opinion (unpopular)... STP >>>> PJ Don't @ me.
I used to joke that Flock of Seagulls, Ministry and Spandau Ballet were born into the same family (cousins, maybe?) and each veered in COMPLETELY different directions. FoS>Ministry>SB
#JUSTICEFORHERMANSHERMITS (did I do that right?)
Nice use of the word "behind" as well, Grouse. I wouldn't give it a 10, but completely "ass"cept your reasoning.
There was a HUGE war under the YT comments, it was amazing to read.
Juan Atkins is a god. I was HUGE into techno, but didn't knowingly listen to any of his/Cybotron work until years later. When I finally did hear "No UFOs", it blew my mind. Hard to believe it was from 1985, a time when things like Wham! and "We Are the World" were populating the airwaves. https://youtu.be/KNz01ty-kTQ
My God I couldn't wait for this one! Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” top YouTube official music video comments: 1. Sir Mix-A-Lot was so ahead of his time. He was uplifting black women and promoting body positivity when it wasn’t popular to do so. (response 1): U r unstable if u call that uplifting. (response 2): Nah he just has an ass fetish 2. This isn’t just a song. It’s a cultural phenomenon. 3. i was in a funeral... it has a very emotional and solemn atmosphere, guess who forgot to put their phone on silent mode? 4. 2:15 Dang! I totally forgot MixALot threw simps under the bus. One more reason to keep loving this after three decades. 5. I never noticed that the magazine thats supposed to be Cosmo called Cosmopygian. It's a very clever reference to the ancient Greek word "Kalypigian" which means "having well-shaped buttocks". 6. After reading Chaucer's "The Reeve's Tale", with the lines "this wenche thikke" and "I wol nat lye", I can conclude that Sir Mix-A-Lot is a true MAN OF CULTURE. 7. I started discovering jazz in the 40s and listened to it all my life. Next Friday I will be 97 years old and I can say that I had a beautiful life with beautiful music. Jazz was always there for me when I was feeling bad and I was also able to inspire my wife for jazz. I hope that today's generation will also enjoy the music a little. (response 1): Sir, this is an Arby’s. 8. My daughter could recite this whole thing at age 8. I was stunned. She’s a PhD now. (response 1): Let me guess: Proctologist. (response 2): Is your girl Emma ? 9. The official national anthem of Brazil 10. I just discovered the OG 90's Karen!!!
It's Sunday morning, and I still don't know who won last night...and I'm okay with that. I'm catching up on the TNOCS comments, and playing Legos with my 6 year old and answering questions he has about Martin Luther King, Jr. No better way to spend a Sunday morning :)
Shallow thegue might agree with you on this list, but Super Agent Mariah is my pinnacle moving forward. Her acting is horrible, but Shallow thegue Did. Not. Care.
A week ago I asked if two bands had ever completed this symmetry. Now I'm wondering if TLC has it in them...and can they get it charted. C'mon, TLC!!! (P.S. Linear's "TLC" is a 3.)
I posted this under Wednesday's column, but The Cure's FIIL is a 4. Yo La Tengo's version, which I heard years after (so I should've liked the original more) is an 8. https://youtu.be/jJwTSTlpsak
I just looked up Dua Lipa's discography, because I really don't know her music...and WOW have things changed: 1. Her single "Scared to be Lonely" peaked at #76, yet was certified 2x Platinum 2. Her album Future Nostalgia peaked at #3...and sold a TOTAL of 17,000 copies. 3. Update: she's sold over 300K copies as of 2021...and for the fifth time in my life, I've edited a Wikipedia page.
My second favorite behind "Cheatin'", which is more C&W than I ever listen to.
About 15 years ago I had tickets to see Tool and RHCP, I think on the same night, and I had to make a choice. I chose Tool. I think I chose wisely. Dream Theater is some great stuff. Threshold I've never heard; great recommendation. RJ, this is one of my regular entries in TNOCS. Thanks!
I remember LL Cool J performing, and thinking it was impressive to try, but it didn't come off great.
I made a mistake in my recreated list from June: I included 2 songs by Front Line Assembly from a CD I didn't pick up until the fall of 1992. ...on the same day I picked up the Singles soundtrack. And from that moment until July of 1996, I really REALLY wanted to visit Seattle. I've been there a few times since, and it's never disappointed. In fact, it's better than the movie, and almost as good as the soundtrack. Almost.
I have to agree: Week 1: Outfield Week 2: Sophie B
Y-Y-Y-You can just....keep on... This was my favorite off her first album.
5-10-10. Maybe I am that grumpy old man who gives 1s and 2s to newer artists (hi, Drake!) while handing out 10s like they're Pez to the 60s classics.
I have a story about this CD. We'll discuss it in the winter of 1993.
I KNOW "Groove is in the Heart" is more popular, but I loved "Pussycat Meow" a LOT more - in fact, I still own the 12" single even though I haven't owned a turntable in 20+ yrs. The reason? The single version above is NOT the authoritative Pussycat. You have to go with the meow mix. https://youtu.be/ZFiwWhPLCy8
I've always considered myself an 80s kid (after all, I turned 21 at the end of 1989), but: 86999 98799
I was horrified - at myself - for laughing out loud to that comment.
I'm only aware of the pop charts because of my daughter - the female artists I listen to are more alt rock-ish (Holly Humberstone, Beebadoobee, girl in red, Zella Day, Japanese Breakfast), but save ONE other song, Dua Lipa is the best pop artist I've heard in a while. Fortunately, I'll have an opportunity to defend the other song in Tom's column in a couple of years. I'm not sure he'll like it, and the artist has made some very questionable moves, but it is a 10...and I'll go to war over it.
Utah Saints were amazing. Another artist that suffered when it became too expensive to include multiple samples. I'll talk more about them when David Morales released the first Platinum on Black series in 1993....
And we have a rival to "The Lord's Prayer"! Maybe these two could've done a tour. 9-2-9-8 I have been humming/singing Joe Public all week. It's an earworm. This song made me realize I haven't had enough Gladys Knight in my life, and that comes even after I watched her on The Masked Singer...every episode. Not a big Todd Rundgren fan, but this song hits the spot. Happy Friday everyone!!!
I can confirm this list. Now I'm going to need someone to create a Spotify playlist for the top 36!
Well-written! When I was in Europe (Denmark, I think in 1996?) I stopped and listened to a Andean musical group (something similar could be seen across Europe at the time, and led to The Fast Show having a skit called "The Patagonians"). I bought the CD, and this reminds me of it. Does anyone know if the musical scales in the Andean mountains are the same as those in South Asia?
God I love this song. I should've included the other samples when discussing it in Wednesday's column.
But Carey’s version of “I’ll Be There” doesn’t really stand up as its own thing, either. As I read that paragraph, I kept thinking...he's going to give it a 6. YES!!!!
Mariah Carey’s “I’ll Be There” top YouTube official music video comments: 1. literally her background singers can out sing anyone in this generation (response #1: Hahahaha so very true. I always thought 2:33 was sung by Mariah until I watched this.) (response #2: sad girl they are still singin with her just saw on Iheart radio) (response #3: Best vocalist singers in the world aren't that famous. For ex dimash this dude can out sing Mariah herself) 2. I am from France, well when I've first heard this song I thought it was a religious song , specially because of the vocals at the intro and at the end .I was stunned by the beauty and the purity of Mariah's voice, besides its agility ! Then I became obsessed with her.Later, her song Anytime You Need a Friend and her rendition of O Holy Night made me definitely a lamb. .
