We don't have to fall apart We don't have to fight We don't need to go to hell and back every night We can make a deal!
How on God’s green earth does a sub-par song like “Seasons Change” block a stone-cold-10 like “What Have I Done To Deserve This” out of the #1 slot? I realize that Pet Shop Boys will always be remembered primarily for “West End Girls”, but for me, “What Have I…” was their finest moment. The Dusty Springfield parts are filled with such genuine emotion and it was so thrilling to hear her voice on the radio again. https://youtu.be/WRPhsLO1nl4?t=15
I'm surprised Tom didn't mention that A Taste Of Honey won the Grammy award that year for Best New Artist.
Frankie Valli's "Grease" would be ripped off a couple of years later when Leif Garrett scored his only Top 10 single with "I Was Made For Dancin'". The melody of the verses is almost identical: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GVugJj7BUs
Two corrections to Tom's article: * Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street" is a 10. * Justin Bieber's "Where Are Ü Now" is not.
"Baker Street" is an easy 10. A classic for the ages!
Tom! "If I Can't Have You" is better than a lowly 6/10! I'd give it an 8, maybe even a 9.
I know "Stayin' Alive" is the one that has emerged as the classic for the ages, but "Night Fever" is the chill-inducing, superior song. At least in my book.
The stronger song in the Top 5 this week is "Emotion" by Samantha Sang...also written by Barry and Robin Gibb! This one has stood the test of time, probably because of the Destiny's Child remake. But still... a better song than "(Love Is) Thicker Than Water."
Yes, but both sides of the single charted. "Don't Be Cruel" hit #1 and "Hound Dog" charted at #2.
Elvis Presley "Don't Be Cruel / Hound Dog"
When I saw this column was about "You Light Up My Life", I almost didn't read it because I detest the song so deeply. But thank God I did, if only to see Tom refer to Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" as "certainly the most important piece of dance music ever made" --- truer words have never been written!
Since this article pointed out Mariah Carey's "Emotions", shouldn't it have also included Cheryl Lynn's "Got To Be Real"? I always thought that was just a lawsuit waiting to happen!
I'm absolutely shocked Tom gave this shitty song a 5. I was honestly expecting a 2.
Tom gave "I'm Your Boogie Man" 9/10 Tom gave "Sir Duke" 9/10 Sorry, but these two records are not on the same level.
Tom saying that this isn't his "favorite version of Stevie Wonder" is not a good enough reason to deny "Sir Duke" a 10.
I'm just glad I'm not the only white person in America who doesn't love "Hotel California."
By the way "Wichita Lineman" is a 10. Can I get a witness?
