Wow. Certainly didn't expect this after their mixtape Tapes. Do like this funk-rock approach, but hopefully there'll also be some math-rock numbers they perfected on Total Life Forever. But what's amazing is Yannis' belting vocals: either he's had training or it's some super-compressed studio trickery...
I use to think big music corps suck the life out of music. Now I'm more inclined to think the general public has lazy ears and are too quick to part with their dosh for simple soulless music with empty calories.
God's Pee on Valentine's Day 2013, provided Mayans getting it wrong. http://blog.moshcam.com/music-news/godspeed-you-black-emperor-announce-first-oz-tour/
Rock will never die; genres shall always shift and permutate - Just as punk "replaced" prog and grunge ushered out hair metal. When a group manages to capture and articulate the mass' frustration and imagination, factoring in timing and socio-political relevance, proper management, promotion, luck and a healthy dose of sheer talent & determination, we have our next seismic shift.
Alternative artists rarely rake it in for the very fact that they are alternative/indie. Fans then cry foul when their beloved artists sell out. Support your artists if you wish to keep them from losing their magic.
Being a collector, I'd like to think I have the definitive article when it comes to my favourite albums. With iTunes, Amazon and now Best Buy offering their own bonus tracks, I just give up. Keep it simple, stop milking the fans with never-ending editions and you have my undying devotion($).
Gave you a +1 to neutralise your minus. Are fans really so blind they can't be objective?? While certain genres are difficult if not impossible to meld, and hats off to those who pull it off; I agree Yeasayer may have over-reached their ambitions here. Shame that.
Been a HUGE Yeasayer fan but Fragrant World and flagrant comments leave me cold. Embarassing how some artists feel the need to big up themselves indirectly.
I agree with your sentiment and believe 2012 has been somewhat disappointing so far. Father John Misty's Fear Fun is my favourite album and having watched his concert lately, it feels the musical highpoint of my year has been and gone. Yeasayer's newbie sounds unfocussed and thrown together; and works worse than Jack White / Alicia Keys effort - Unsure if a successful hybrid between indie and r&b would ever work.

Sorry but I'm refusing to page through to add to your hit count. Love your site though. I have been following The Lips close enough to have my own list. Still, one wonders if this stuff comes easily for them or if it's a case of try-hard. Let's hope the music doesn't suffer as a result - any reports if these marathon concerts are up to par?
