Not sure if this is cool or not, posting an All Music link, but this sums it up pretty well for me. Especially as a fan that had waited three years for the next album after the masterpiece that was And Then Nothing....... There are fantastic songs on Summer Sun, and honestly I am more a fan of it now than I was on release, but as a whole it lacks a lot of what the albums surrounding it deliver. http://www.allmusic.com/album/summer-sun-mw0000594957
I'm not sure I agree with this list entirely, but I could honestly care less about that. Yo La Tengo! Such an amazing band, and a necessity in this Stereogum series. I bought May I Sing With Me when it was first released and fell in love with it. I then went out and bought the first four, and when Painful was released, I knew that YLT was one of the best bands America (or anywhere for that matter) had to offer. What a masterpiece! The best was yet to come, which is amazing when I think back on it. I have seen YLT many many times. Some of those shows have been outright awful and some of them just ok, but most have been nothing short of transcendent on some level. I cannot think of one other band out there like them. SO good. So many great songs and albums, start to finish. And to think that they have a brand new album coming out soon!!!!! There have been very few bands out there this special. Lucky to have them.
How are there no comments here?!! Great interview. The new record....Eitzel's best in a while. First time I saw AMC was on the Mercury tour in Atlanta after having waited a couple of years to catch them. It blew my mind. That incarnation of the band was just unstoppable on a good night. Criminal those records are out of print.
Can we get an amen for the Dave Allen (Gang of Four / Shriekback) cameo?!!......ok, it's milliseconds long, (most clear at 1:03) but awesome nonetheless.
King Tuff is fantastic! But polished precision? Not a lot polished or precise about those records.
the rubber one from your name right? the one you borrowed from your mom? I mean, you were two when this album was released, what are you on about?
Sorry. I meant that I agree with Raptor Jesus below re: Pure Phase, not Tom.
I would go with Tom's suggestion (below) about picking up Pure Phase next, but Ladies and Gentlemen seems to be their undisputed high point. If that record doesn't send you over the moon, then the others are not gonna do it either. I think this is the best Spiritualized album since then, but I'm not a fan of all the work in between, especially Amazing Grace. I don't know how to put this any kinder, so I'm sorry if it really offends....but Tom, is definitely drinking the Spiritualized Kool-Aid. Keep that in mind. I agree that the strings are amazing on this one though. Maybe some of the best orchestration on any Spiritualized release to date.
again....make room for the 12 year old girl/boy. head bowed. long live you. really. just beware of the birthdays ahead......the chemical romance eyeliner won't always look so damned cute.
...and she?/he still looks 11 yrs old!
Four Calendar Cafe is a much weaker album.
And as a friend of mine pointed out, I can't believe that more folks have not commented that the verses in 'Myth' sound a lot like "Eyes Without A Face" by Billy Idol.....which I like, but still.
Although we have come to different conclusions re: this album....that is funny.
Yeah...we are coming from completely different places on this one! Weird. I think the vocals have more nuance and range than they ever have had on their albums, and the guitar is so much more lush. I love Teen Dream too, don't get me wrong, but I'm blown away by this one. Sounds like they have been listening to a lot of Cocteau Twins (Heaven or Las Vegas specifically) but not a bad thing in my book. Can't wait to buy this on vinyl, if anything is lacking (for me).....it's this low bit rip. I'd say, just give it more time. It's not that radical a departure, just refined.
I agree....this sounds so much more lush and dynamic than Teen Dream to me. Totally the next level comparatively. Loving it, blown away by it. Really beautiful album.
Still not sure about this one.....but one big reason this album "doesn’t sound like it belongs to 2012" and sounds more " like it belongs to, let’s say, 1997" is the programming. I keep wanting SSvB to add more organic or natural sounding rhythm, and maybe that's my problem, but this is possibly the stiffest they have sounded yet. It sounds exactly like 1997 in that regard.
.......but got better and better with consecutive plays.
wow....that kinda sucked first listen.
Sorry. Your right. Dave Krusen was Pearl Jam's first drummer and played on Ten...Matt Chamberlain joined after the recording and before the release of the record.
It's Matt Chamberlain, who was Pearl Jam's original drummer. Has played with a ton of folks over the years as a session drummer.
I had no idea either! Seriously great to see!
Love Mazzy Star, but listening to, and watching them play is completely different. They barely wowed in a 400 capacity room with great sound years ago....mainly because they all seemed bored as hell on stage. I doubt that part is gonna have changed sadly. PULP should be amazing to see on the other hand.
...for sale iTunes today too....
actually, it's amazing, the difference between different diaper brands....
Did't realize I could "agree" with someone so much in the span of two sentences...
I"ve been listening to Loveless for...well 20 years, and still hear things differently or new on each spin. Crazy isn't it? It just never gets old or less awe-inspiring to me. Double Nickels on the Dime is a serious record too, I agree. Nothing else out there like it I agree. In my top ten for sure.
Err....In A Long Time....
It's the best record Tom Waits has done pin a long time. I am loving it! The best in a long while!!!!
Only one listen, so may be jumping the gun, but so far....really great. Best album all the way through in a long while. Maybe since Franks Wild Years. OK, Bone Machine. Just excited that after 25+ years of being a fan that I'm hearing an album that sounds like it will warrant a lot of repeat listens. Great songs, great players, etc., etc., etc.
my guess is it is "something" on the tip of a needle...re: the tracks, i'm liking this a lot more than 'scratch my back' stuff. this could be really good!
A whole lot of greatness that...+ Monster and +the other handful of albums for me
Good Lord, this thing just gets worse by the minute....make it stop somebody.
Loving this, but we are talking about 2nd album here, not album 12......."Can Do No Wrong" category may be a bit much don't you think?
So Zooropa only comes with the Uber Deluxe Version? Hmmm.......
Yeah, I didn't say I heard Coldplay when I listen to Bon Iver, my ears are fine, but thanks. I said I wish this SONG was a little less Coldplay LIKE. Then I made a comment about Coldplay and Bon Iver being closer in the musical stratosphere than not when dl09 said Coldplay had never produced anything remotely like this.......which I guess is true in retrospect....Bon Iver has produced something that is remotely like Coldplay. I'm actually not a total Coldplay hater, and their work with Eno is not all top 40 drudge. Anyway, whatever...it's not like we are discussing the divide between Arvo Pärt and Justin Bieber here. It is what is.
You might want to broaden your horizons. I'm not dissing Coldplay (honestly) or Iver. These are not as far removed as you might think, especially the Eno touches here. There is a whole world of music out there that sounds a lot further away than the two....just sayin'. The full length, on first listen, sounds like it has a lot to offer by the way
I wish it sounded more Peter Gabriel-ish and a lot less Coldplay like. Only one listen, but.........
hmmm....looks like a Men at Work single or something. it's kinda just wrong enough to be right.
