For a more positive statement: I'm also a huge Damon Albarn fan, but lived in ATL for 15 years without seeing Outkast. So I went with Outkast and it was worth it. Though I did catch Damon's last 3 songs which made me feel even more conflicted
You include a performance that wasn't even part of the festival and exclude Jack White? I realize people are hating on Jack these days, but that performance was great.
Veedon Fleece has been my favorite Van album since my trip to Ireland where I listened to it every day. "Astral Weeks' older, wiser cousin" is a great description. Enjoyed the list!
I'm not quite the superfan #1 that I was in '94/'95 (I was the perfect age -- 14) but I believe 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours (which was a combo of their actual debut LP 39/smooth and some EP tracks) was their debut on Lookout, not Kerplunk. Either way, thanks for writing this, brings back some good (and bad) memories. It's interesting how you can still love an album 20 years later but for entirely different reasons. Now I appreciate the effortless sense of melody and song structure. Obviously back then it was the lyrics and energy that hooked me. This album, plus Rancid's Let's Go, plus In Utero, are what inspired me to start a band. We probably played When I Come Around a couple hundred times.
I generally like this list, but State of Love and Trust should probably make an appearance. Best early Pearl Jam in my opinion. I also love Last Exit almost as much as Corduroy. And I think No Way is underrated . . . and Red Mosquito.
Face to Face is my favorite Daft Punk song. I listen to it at least once a day. And I always thought the sample was "the third law" as in the third law of physics. Fits thematically. And love the ELO Evil Woman guitar sample. Such a beautifully produced track
Kinda love this list! -- Whispering Pines and Acadian Driftwood FTW. But I agree, Chest Fever maybe in place of Ophelia or Twilight? I like them both, but Chest Fever is more interesting . . .
exactly! it's extremely consistent and cohesive. And all those other "c" words . . .
By the way, I'm a Connecticuter, Mallrats fan ("they only beat Vancouver once, maybe twice, in a lifetime"), AND an Alex P. Keaton fan. So needless to say, I'm a fan of your pic and handle.
I guess I'm not diehard, but been a fan since Parklife. And I love Good Song . . . I actually love most of Think Tank. And yes, it's a Blur album even though Graham isn't on most of it (though he is on about a third of it).
I love that one must be sophisticated to listen to the New York Dolls and the Stooges. I know what you mean, in context, but just sounds funny. Raw Power!
Agreed, they opened with IATTBYH before the album came out and it blew me away. I had a feeling the rest of the album was going to be just as good. And it was.
When did pop music become "art"?? Make no mistake, this is not punk, this is not hip-hop, this is not rock n roll. It's POP. Gorillaz are a bunch of cartoon characters! This type of music was created to be exploited.
If you like how this song sounds, you should probably listen to it. If you don't, then you probably shouldn't.
By the way, If this is what it takes to get Andre making music again, I'm all for it. Better than designing all them clothes and textiles and such.
