Actually what I really love about this, now i've paid attention, is trying to spot the moment where he realizes he's fucked up and the little voice in his brain is goes "You can save this!" Yeah: "I don't know if we're turning into an oligarchy, or WHAT we're turning into..." Subtext: "Maybe it IS an OLIGARHY. Jeez! An oligarchy I could almost put up with!
