What a fantastic track! This is certainly the best Lil Wayne verse of the year. I cannot wait to buy the physical cd single when it hits stores later this month!
1. Sometimes I feel like Lily only get a pass because music writer guys think she's hot.
2. I actually really love that MKTO song, even if the rappity-rapping makes me wince.
3. No one needs to rap over turn down for what, but hearing that remix made me realize that the beat borrows a lot from mid-00's hyphy.
Oh come on, it's being used for humorous purposes. It's basically just a signifier of "goth muzak" to sell the joke, which is way different than an ad that tries to connect a popular indie song to a product for cool points. Big fat WHATEVS.
Is it bad that it actually put a smile on my face? I know we're all supposed to hate it cause like, pop icons are sacred, but whatever it's fun and well-executed.
Sorry to get all music biz, but what exactly is FTP's demographic? They only had one hit but fill stadiums and headline festivals, so they're obviously appealing to someone, but who? Teens, college radio, pitchfork readers with poptimist bent?
Is Tom being blackmailed by Nabil or something? Every video that guy does is fine but Tom writes about it like it's IMAX footage of Jesus' second coming.
It always struck me as ironic that Gondry became known for his "diy" aesthetic, since his most famous videos would never have been possible without the giant major label music video budgets of the 90s. People always assumed he was making his videos out of cardboard, when in reality, they were far more expensive than even the biggest pop videos of today. I think this video is an interesting "small scale" Gondry experiment, kind of like watching Michael Bay's Pain and Gain. It still has all of Gondry's charm, but feels much less epic than his most famous videos.
The moral of the story: the public will forgive all kinds of shenanigans if the music is good. If Kanye were releasing Azealia-level material, he'd be in the same position.
It's annoying to me when an artist so BLATANTLY rips off another artist's video. Kanye should be ashamed of himself.

Maybe in 1998, but radio, especially alternative radio, is hardly the powerhouse it once was. Fitz and The Tantrums, AWOLNATION, and Bastille all had big Alt rock radio hits this year, would you say they're more mainstream than AF? Surely having a one hour special on network TV puts your music in front of a wider audience than KROQ can these days.
And at this point, can we really say that Arcade Fire is "punching above their weight"? They have a grammy, they're on the season premier of SNL, and they're album is being reviewed in every major publication in existence. If they aren't of the biggest bands in the world, than who is?
Totally agreed. This is akin to absolutepunk.net writing an article criticizing the youtube awards for not including Yellowcard in any categories. And really, those "pop stars" have some of the highest viewed videos on youtube, why wouldn't they include them?
So the way to "fix" the youtube awards is to fill it with things stereogum and it's readers like? I think this might be a case of confusing "popular on the internet" with "what I like on the internet."
Actually, it's a shrewd move on youtube's part to co-opt the VMA crowd and combine it with the internet. Some of youtube's most watched videos are Beiber, Gomez, Lady Gaga, etc- their awards show should reflect that, and at this point, they can claim ownership of Beiber videos far more than MTV can. I wouldn't be surprised if the goal of the youtube awards is to someday supplant the vma's as the ultimate youth culture award show.
Also, lol at people being mad that all the nominees aren't Of Montreal or whatever.
Yeah, but one above average mixtape song (and i'd argue that it isn't even a full on song, just a few sketches over a pre-existing beat) and suddenly she was on the cover of Vibe, Spin, Paper, Dazed and Confused, etc? They were so excited about how hot, fashionable, and brandable she was that they forgot that she'd barely even done anything.
I'll always point to the summer of 2012, when Azealia was on about 20 magazine covers and being feverishly covered by sterogum/pitchfork/fader and hadn't even released a song yet, as the moment when I became extremely jaded about music journalism.
Hey guys, remember The Ting Tings?
The shelf life of your average "indie" band is a year and a half max. Ironically, indie bands will always be outlived by the press machines that use them for hits and then spit them out- stereopitchforkfadergum
