When we last spotted …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, they we are at All Tomorrow’s Parties. That weekend at Kutscher’s was wrapped tightly in nostalgia, but Austin’s longest are back with a new EP that’ll work as a stopgap before a new album, so this is about the (immediate) future: The Festival Thyme EP’s out tomorrow. The four-song collection comes with three new tracks, including the “Bells of Creation (Machete Mix),” which will show up in different form on their January ’09 full-length (more on that in a moment). Collector’s can take home the EP either as a 10″ picture disc in an edition of 3,000 (this one has a cover of the Replacement’s “Within Your Reach”) or as non-vinyl version (i.e. digital, physical) version that includes “Inland Sea.” We have the tacklists and the piano-lined, appropriately nautical “Inland Sea.”

The EP was recorded last Spring. And, as previously mentioned, they’re currently finishing up their new record with Chris Coady (TV On The Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Grizzly Bear) at his new DNA Studio in NYC. For now, the EP info:

10″ Vinyl Picture Disc (Justice/Richter Scale)
01 “Bells of Creation” (Machete Mix)
02 “Within Your Reach” (Replacements Cover)
03 “Festival Thyme”
04 “The Betrayal of Roger Casement & the Irish Brigade”

CD EP & all other formats (Superball/Richter Scale & Justice)
01 “Bells of Creation (Machete Mix)
02 “Inland Sea (EP edit)
03 “Festival Thyme”
04 “The Betrayal of Roger Casement & the Irish Brigade”

Festival Thyme EP is out 10/21 via the band’s Richter Scale Records Imprint on Justice and via the German-based Superball in Europe.

Trail of Dead are like the more bombastic form of Oasis that never really came around. Needless to say, they are and will continue to be one of my all-time favs and this track lives up to expectations.

Is the dude on the left really making that face?

You guys are full of shit… this was a revered underground band before they let Interscope kill their career. Anyone who was into Sonic Youth-style noisy indie rock was drooling over this band until they dramatically changed their sound.

These guys never wore hand-knit scarves onstage or contributed music to an episode of Scrubs, so I’d assume that most of you nu-”indie” fags wouldn’t dig them no matter how they sounded.

I agree with you but Interscope didn’t kill their career. This band has talent and ambition and I do respect that but for the most part, their music has been too much of a departure ever since Neil left. Maybe that’s WHY he left. I mean, after the first time I listened to “So Divided”, why are they still calling themselves ….. And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead? Its a different band.

  7. I like it. Thanks.

  8. this band sucks it sooo hard. the collective douche bagery seen in all of their faces is enough to make even the most mainstream music fans shit themselves in disgust.

  9. And you will know us by our faggy haircuts.

  10. biggoted internet commenting much guys?

i like! trail of dead always made my day.

  11. Man, these guys used to rock, and HARD.

I totally hate to be the ‘their first couple of albums before anyone had ever heard of them are the only good ones” guy, but with this band, it totally applies.

i’m only excited because of the replacements cover

Haters beware, Trail of dead are too innovative for your small minds! This is a band that continues to change & grow along w/ their respective multi-genre sounds… too much fun & way interesting to listen to. Love TOD & can’t wait for the new album… I feel they’ve only gotten better as they’ve grown. Moving away from the thrashing bombast of their early releases & more towards delicate, intricate instrumentation that takes a truly open minded music fan to appreciate.

Whoa! Michael Ian Black, Elijah Wood and Ben Gibbard formed a band!?

  15. Jim  |   Posted on Oct 22nd, 2008 0

I want to like TOD’s stuff, but they only seem to deliver a solid track or two per release lately. Sadly, they will never, ever come close to putting out anything as good as Source Tags and Codes. At least they made one great record, I guess.

i do love this band, but i agree that nothing of theirs compares to source tags and codes. i enjoyed there last two albums, but this ep kinda let me down. and the photo is fuckin ridiculous, and i usually dont give shit about that stuff.

Worlds Apart is such a great disk. Also, Wasted State Of Mind is one my favorite songs ever, i’m a sucker for a piano though. I think this sounds great as well. I always think when I listen to them theres like at least a million metal bands that see there name and just say “WTF, why didn’t we think of that name”.

  18. mirocke  |   Posted on Oct 25th, 2008 0

this is the greates band of our times.

Is this picture extremly gay? well……..yes. But i couldn’t really care, I like the song. It’s not like I’m going to be gazing at it while listening to their album anyway. All nay-sayers just insert a picture of your newly found hidden band and sing along

  20. Great song. They were awesome at Rebel the other night.

  21. I like this song a lot.

I like a few portions from So Divded a lot. Namely the opening and closing tracks. And Wasted State of Mind.

I haven’t listened to the rest of it (or Source Tags) enough to form an opinion.

You can not judge …Trail of Dead if you have never seen them live.
You can’t judge album to album. They have matured unlike you hipster d-bags.
They changed my life. Made me believe in music again. Although, I wish they would break stuff again.

  23. I’m quite surprised to see so much hate in here. Personally, I think ToD are fucking fantastic. They really are, as someone put it, innovative. I also don’t buy that Interscope killed their career but they certainly didn’t do anything to help it.

The new album is great. Very grand and musically mature. It always baffles me the lack of attention these guys have gotten but to each their own I suppose.
