Admiral Radley is made up of Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray from Earlimart and Jason Lytle and Aaron Burtch of Grandaddy. The band sounds like a good mix of both projects (their bio says they were even thinking of calling themselves “Earlidaddy” or “Grandimart”). But since it’s Lytle singing lead on this first taste from their upcoming LP, it’s hard not to hear Grandaddy on title track “I Heart California.” From the complex relationship he has with his home state, to his breathy vocals, to the tiny keyboard that comes in on the song’s melody, it all reminds you of his former band. Of course, this complex relationship is as much about Lytle as it is California (as he says throughout: “I am California.”)
The band will do a (I heart) California tour, starting with a show at the Hammer Museum in L.A. on 7/8 (they met Admiral Radley himself in the museum’s cafe), and stopping in the members’ hometowns, before they do a brief rest of the west coast tour.
I Heart California is out 7/13 via The Ship, Espinoza’s new label and recording studio.
