Band To Watch: Givers

Givers are a young quintet from Lafayette, Louisiana, the local openers for Dirty Projectors last year at Chelsea’s in Baton Rouge. The Projectors hadn’t heard them before that night but were impressed enough to ask them to join them on their next tour through the South and the East Coast. We’re impressed, too, and easily understand why Longstreth & Co. would be into their eclectic, ecstatic, celebratory, knotty, vocally rich sound. It’s unclear if they got their name from the Lucky Dragons song, but their music’s packed with that sort of psychedelic buoyancy, homegrown exoticism (here, Afropop via the American South), and rattling optimism/joy. You may hear Vampire Weekend, but via something a bit more expansive and shaggy like Poi Dog Pondering or another Dirty Projector tourmate (and BTW), tUnE-YarDs. That, and the kids can play and sing with the best of them. Look no further than their two standout singles: Obvious favorite “Up Up Up” and the slightly mellower “In My Eyes” (with its swirling, sea-at-sunset beauty) to see what we mean.

“Up Up Up” live in Louisiana:

  1. Confirmed: They got their name from the Lucky Dragons song.

  2. For the Masquerade show, it’s “Hell” not “Hall.” Doesn’t really matter because I am pumped for this band!

  3. All it takes is seeing GIVERS live once to become a lifelong convert. See them live more than that and down the rabbit hole you’ll go into obsession– and justifiably too

    • What Warm said!!! Saw them at the end of April in Lafayette. They are honestly one of the best live bands I’ve seen and I’ve seen a lot over many years. The joy of Givers live is not that far off from seeing U2 live. Are they there yet? But I have little doubt it will happen. Go see them folks, because seeing magic in a club doesn’t happen very often.

But don’t listen to me. Here’s what Andy Pareti said in a Soundcheck review last year:

There’s so much to say about Givers, a band on a steadfast journey taking its first steps out of the shadow of obscurity. And yet only one observation even comes close to assessing their abilities – in their brief existence of less than a year of live performances and a 5-song EP to their name, Givers have effectively imprinted themselves in the memories of everybody that has had the pleasure of seeing them perform.

Andy’s review is dead on. These you men and woman are special and offer something for every from 6 to 60 (I’m not exaggerating).

Pull your tongue out of their arsehole, Gary. Dogs do that. You’re not a dog, are you gary?

  4. These guys really do put on one of the best live shows you’ll ever go to. It’s impossible to not dance to their performance. They also happen to be super cool and nice. Id buy their EP or at least get their song Ceiling of Plankton which is probably their best song.

  5. this is getting more and more awesome every time i listen to it. i hope to hear more from these guys.

  6. GIVERS are really great live! They reminded me of DPz before they came on next in their ATL show

  7. Saw them open for DPz about a year ago, and they completely owned the evening. Spellbinding live.

  8. clever lover,

Their ep is really good! You can get it at their Bandcamp page if you want.
