I first wrote about Seattle-based pianist/ex-Everlovely Lightningheart member Faith Coloccia’s Mamiffer in 2008, around the time of her Hyrdra Head-imprinted debut Hirror Enniffer, pairing her with UK post-black metal shapeshifter Caïna as part of an Outsiders column. She showed up again in the first post about R. Loren’s Sailors With Wax Wings — she put together the album’s design/layout/painting/collage). So, metal associations, but she’s not making metal. Another: In that initial ’08 post, ex-Isis leader Aaron Turner (Twilight, Hydra Head’s co-owner) was mentioned as a guest. On this bigger, more intense second collection Mare Decendrii he’s a steady member and has teamed up with Coloccia for SIGE, a label releasing materials for their various projects. This time out Mamiffer’s guests include Joe Preston, Don McGreevy (ex-Earth), Eyvind Kang, Mika Ratto and Jussi Lehtisalo of longtime Finnish heroes Circle, etc. The collection was co-produced with Earth, Wolves In The Throne Room, Sunn O))) tweaker Randall Dunn, who did such great things for Six Organs Of Admittance a couple of years ago. A friend just described the results as punk Steve Reich or Philip Glass. The beautiful 20-minute “We Speak In The Dark” works as an ideal introduction to the album. Its mix of piano, guitar, strings, drone, percussion, and (ultimately) voices will make anything you do feel weightier on an already weighty day.
01 “As Freedom Rings” (13:50)
02 “We Speak In The Dark” (20:49)
03 “Blanket of Ash” (5:26)

Mare Decendrii is out 3/15 via SIGE. Other future/past SIGE releases include a split between Mamiffer and House of Low Culture, a live collaboration between Mamiffer, House of Low Culture and Merzbow, and splits with Oakeater and R. Loren’s most well-known project, Pyramids. Check out Coloccia’s design and Mamiffer blogs.
