Rick Rubin couldn’t save the music business. So let’s see what he can do for the Gossip. The blog-sanctioned arm of daceable punk has been wheezing its last wheeze for awhile, creating an interesting situation for its players: move into other directions or muscle through on look and charm. If the only bands that can get away with a staid sound are those with well defined personality (hey, Franz), and your band includes Beth Ditto, there isn’t much to worry about. So far Rick Rubin’s production work on the trio’s new album Music For Men sounds like a fairly easy paycheck: guitars like Ferdinand, bits of synths, trying to distill “Standing In The Way…”‘s crossover appeal into a tighter little package.
Music For Men is due out 6/22 via Music With A Twist/Sony.

Either Im not trying hard enough to be open minded… or Im going to kill myself.
Beth Ditto’s voice is as solid as ever, but it sounds like her vocals are fighting with the percussion on this track. It can be a bit overwhelming. Still, this doesn’t squelch my excitement about the Gossip’s new album one bit.
