Radiohead - Staircase

Radiohead posted a propulsive/percussive keyboard-soaked song to Deadairspace, rendered live for their studio mate Nigel Godrich’s From The Basement web performance series. “And no, you’re not seeing double,” adds Phil Selway. “The doppelganger drummers are myself and [Portishead's] Clive Deamer. Clive has long been one of my favourite drummers and so I was really excited when he agreed to perform with us. Hope you like what we’ve all done.”

  1. That was quite good. I like the bass line it’s super smooth. Percusion and bass is all I need.

  2. Thank You for posting this, ‘gum. It’s cool to see Radiohead are still adventurous after all these years.

  3. I really love this song instrumentally, but Thom’s vocals aren’t doing ANYTHING for the melody. I’d love to hear a studio version, were something like that could be tweaked and perfected. Still, these guys are doing great stuff.

    • Yeah I totally agree. It sounded like he was just riffing on it or something. The rest of the music is fantastic, but he could definitely do more with the vocal melody. He’s usually so creative with them but this one sounded pretty lazy.

      • I mean it’s no “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall” but it’ll do ;)

      • With that said, I downloaded the .mp3 and for some reason the vocals don’t bother me as much on it. I don’t know why.

        • They don’t really ‘bother’ me, I just don’t find they add much except for the ‘Let me take control’ part. The bass is really the driving melody in this song… also nice melodies from jonny. I dunno! Thom’s usually all over the map with his vocals and beautifully, but not this time.

    • True. I felt exactly the same way about the vocals. They’re like the archetypal Thom Yorke vocals which isn’t such a bad thing but I felt the melody of the song wasn’t exactly the ideal milieu for that particular style of vocals.

  4. Boy, if this was on King Of Limbs instead of Feral, or just thrown in as another track.
    I really like this song.

    • It can be.

Do what I’m doing, add it to The King of Limbs manually with Supercollider and The Butcher, and pretend they were already included.

I’m sure there will be an mp3 of The Daily Mail too. : )

It makes for a much more satisfying experience. Not that TKoL was bad, but definitely leaves you wanting more.

  5. Why wasn’t this on King Of Limbs, I mean it’s really good.

  6. Wow, I know I’m a total nerd, but I just love to watch Thom Yorke dance in between singing. There is something so cool and youthful about it.

    Thanks for posting this :)

  7. THOM’S HAIRCUT FROM IN RAINBOWS SESSION IS BETTER!

I still really like TKOL. The last 4 tracks are gorgeous.

  8. love radiohead but this sucks

  9. Really like the sweeping synths, and as mentioned the bass line is great. I could almost see a brass section in this song. great stuff

  10. Thom looks like Robert Carlyle!

  11. I dig it.
