Cardiff pop troupe Los Campesinos! are still card-carrying members of the International Tweexcore Underground, but that doesn’t mean they can’t up the distortion. They’re just making like Some Velvet Sidewalk or Crayon, who as part of LC!’s beloved early/mid ’90s International Pop Underground (see Beat Happening, Heavenly), mixed twee sugar with distorted rock. Or maybe Tom Campesinos caught the bug after doing that Tokyo Police Club “Tessellate” remix” and decided to make good on his Minor Threat references. Actually, they likely just needed a track to play on the so-called SHRED YR FACE tour, which they’re doing with No Age and Times New Viking in October. Whatever the case, yes, there are louder guitars in this song.
Los Campesinos! – “How I Taught Myself To Scream” (MP3)
It’s true, LC! released Hold On Now, Youngster… earlier this year and are about to release another one, We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed, but “How I Taught Myself To Scream” will exist outside of both. It was recorded during the Hold On sessions and was recently made available to the kids who subscribe to their mailing list.
So, if you’re keeping track, We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed is out 10/13 in the UK on Wichita and 11/11 in North America via Arts & Crafts. Before that, they’re out on the SHRED YR FACE tour. All dates are with No Age and Times New Viking:
