Mark Kozelek Played “War On Drugs: Suck My Cock” In Joy Division Style And Joked About Internet Drama In Hollywood Last Night

Well I for one am pretty happy to see that the collective rage of the internet has shifted to Brunchgate after a solid half-week of The Koztroversy (eh? no?). Obviously I did my part to help fan the flames of the latter, which sort of came into sharp focus for me last night, while seeing the writer/documentary maker Jon Ronson read and discuss a section from his upcoming book, So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed. That stuff was apparently on Mark Kozelek’s mind last night, too. He played the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, and according to commenters on the essential Koz fansite Sad Reminders (or “Sad Whiners,” as it’s known to Kozelek himself), Kozelek not only played “War On Drugs: Suck My Cock” for the first time in a live setting, but did so “in a Joy Division style.” Said one commenter who was in attendance at the mostly-electric gig:

His jokes about “abuse” and saying that he isn’t as bad a person as the internet says he is were incredibly entertaining, and the crowd understood that the whole “crisis on the internet” thing going on with Koz at the moment is just some stupid overblown bullshit. I was worried that he would be whining the whole night about it, but to my happiness and the crowd’s, he was in a stellar mood and played off the jokes in great form: “I need someone else to pick on now”, “Oh sorry, I didn’t mean to abuse you. I am sorry. Sorry!”

Kozelek reportedly introduced “War On Drugs: Suck My Cock” by explaining, “When I originally wrote this song I wanted to do it more Joy Division-esque, so let’s try that version.” Here’s a bit of it:

"When I originally wrote this song I wanted to do it more Joy Division-esque, so let's try that version." Just when I thought I couldn't love Mark any more, he says he's a Joy Division fan. #WarOnDrugsSuckMyCock #MarkKozelek #SunKilMoon #LifeComplete
