Fraea – “Criminal” Video (Stereogum Premiere)

Self described as “shadow pop,” Fraea come across like a murkier Phantogram or Lapsley. “Criminal,” from the Minneapolis duo’s upcoming Bend Your Bones EP, is a retro-futuristic synth ballad with a tender heart. Building on a synthetic foundation, they rely on the vulnerability of lead singer Jessie Daley’s lyrics to lend human elements to the sleek tonal palate. Smoke and mirrors pervade the set of director Maria Juranic’s “Criminal” video as the band expresses the dark narrative behind their work. The setting within everyday life juxtaposes otherwise non-earthly elements in order to show the inevitable drama set at the cross section between the two. Watch below.

Bend Your Bones is out this Friday, 4/29. Fraea play a release show Saturday, 4/30 at Icehouse in Minneapolis; get details here.
