Dentist – Meet You There (In Delaware) (Stereogum Premiere)

New Jersey surf-rock quartet Dentist have precision and technicality that borders on math-rock, but they also know how to temper their musicality for deft variations of energy and aesthetic. They’re set to drop their sophomore effort, Ceilings, this summer, and the latest venture into the album is “Meet You There (In Delaware).”

The song opens with intricate, intertwined bass and lead guitar and lets you know it’s going to be a rhythmic barrage from the outset. Rolling drums, and even more layers of bright, bouncy guitar join along with Emily Bornemann’s entrancing vocal floating above. Bornemann’s lamentations about life’s monotony are not to be glossed over, though it’s easy to get lost in their delivery and the surround sounds. Here’s what she had to say about the song:

This song is about not being able to sit still and always looking for something to do. It seems that we always do the same thing, though, but yet there is this feeling that you need to go out most nights to a bar or see a show, but that’s nothing new. It’s an optimistic song, but there’s a bit of sadness to it.
