Kathryn Calder – “Slip Away”

New Pornographer Kathryn Calder has come into her own the last few years — less the woman who sings Neko Case’s parts when Case can’t tour, and more her own, fully present (live and on record) second vocalist. Are You My Mother? is Calder’s first album of all her own songs — though she is co-songwriter for her other band Immaculate Machines — and, by the sound of this first taste from it, she kept things warm and simple. Shaker, hand claps, and piano build “Slip Away,” until Calder’s voice finds legs on the wordless chorus. It’s nice early morning listening.
