Water Borders – “What Wiwant” (Stereogum Premiere)

San Francisco duo Water Borders’s self-produced debut full-length Harbored Mantras is a sweeping, dirty, spooky collection of chaotically danceable songs that sound like they were recorded in a damp isolation tank. The music’s catchy, tribal, often elegant, always weirdly intense. The guys are deeply into Coil (clearly) and mention “Gamelan rhythms, proto techno, Scott Walker, African drum patterns, dub, Popul Vuh and Glasser” as other inspirations. Fittingly, Glasser’s Cameron Mesirow designed the above cover art, which nails the collection’s overall mood. Take a listen to “What Wiwant,” aka some music for drowning.
