SXSW: Friday Party Picks

We saw a lot yesterday, but more on that later. (For now: Islands, you rule.) Shaking off the cobwebs and the Shiners, we’re getting ready to head back outside, so here are suggestions for what to catch today. Of course, there’s the second part of our three-day party (the Whigs, Liam Finn, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Kaki King, the Weakerthans, Lightspeed Champion), which still includes free SoCo … and nachos to help absorb the SoCo. Also, NPR’s broadcasting today’s installment live online, so cheer loudly and have your NPR debut. There’s obviously more going on than what we’re doing (the “x” in SXSW stands for “excess”), so we put together a carefully curated list for you below. It includes a bunch of Hot Freaks (literally, figuratively), Pitchfork’s packed party, the early-evening metal of Enslaved and 1349, and two out of three of the festival’s “fuck” bands.

That’s a lot of music. To help you narrow down the list without wasting important drinking or Tex Mex time, surf to The Morning News, where you’ll find 763 six-word SXSW reviews. Their thoughts on one of today’s stars, Jens Lekman: “Swedish accents crack me right up.” And a general insight: “Many bands say they were influenced by Pavement. Very few say that they were influenced by No Doubt.” More than six words, but true.
